But Coltrane seems to be justifying discomfort in giving them with some philosophy about what the recipient's "need" to hear them might reflect, and that's irritating, you sexy thing, you.

It's definitely a european attitude--my sister faced it as well from her, um, friend, um, companion, er lover. Whatever. She wanted marriage, even though she subscribes to the "not much point getting married until kids are in the picture." Him, not so much. Nor his brother, who has two kids out of wedlock (same woman--with whom he sleeps at night). His family is entirely comfortable with it. Dunno if the european rights are sufficiently better in important respects such that marriage really does confer no particular advantage other than religious legitimacy.

Or could it be that the 100 people who are about to approve a bill increasing military spending by $85 billion (just to take an obvious example) might have a reasonable assumption that defense contractors' stocks are going to go up when the news is made public?
