What the fuck are you talking about? I've never joked about Wright. I love that guy. I would trade 6 Arods for 1 Wright.

The funniest thing about the Yankee organization is that our greatest team ('98) had 5 less super power hitters than our current team. We had good starting pitching, an excellent bullpen and guys who were solid and consistent in the field and at the plate. That's a team. Why go away from that? I don't fucking get it.

I was a big fan, but 19 years of poor teams can kill that. I didn't really give them a chance and start watching them again until August, and then they started to suck. I believe they were 19-31 over the last 50 games. So this series was really the first time I watched them, AND they played ball.

the stadium is a sore point. Tiger Stadium was tied for oldest stadium with Fenway and Wrigley. It was what I knew growing up.

Management said it had to be replaced because it had too many obstruted view seats, but what they really meant was they wanted a park where they controlled parking. They built Comerica at a time when the team sucked badly. Thet actually put in a ferris wheel and merry go round, because they knew people might not want to watch the games.

The seats at Tiger stadium put you close to the game. I had seats upper deck behind home. When there with my kids I had to watch every pitch because fouls got up there all the time.

In Comerica the seats are much further back. the first year I kept my same seats. they went from great seats to horrible.

So we went from this historic old place where it was great to watch a game, to a Stadium with things to distract you from having to watch the game.

Power hitters fill seats. In 1998, the Yanks drew 2.9 m. This year 4.2.

Granted, there are a million other factors.

I've actually heard this from a few former Detroit fans and can understand it. But I don't get giving up on them because they sucked for 19 seasons. Either they're your team or they aren't, right?

In 1998, baseball was still trying to overcome the problem the strike caused. Now it is more popular than ever. And winning teams fill seats. We've improved attendance every year because we always win the division*.

I'm about 50 pages or so into Fever Pitch, by Nick Hornby. As a lifelong Houston football fan, I can relate to the agony of the Arsenal fan. And yet, we keep on showing up for the games.

Pro football is different. The Lions next home game will be sold. Their last home game this year will be sold out. a few years ago when they started 0-12, the home games were sold out.

Going to the games was cool even when they sucked. There's just something about being at a stadium, and cheering for your team to win, and of course they did win the odd game. I had a 1/4 share of tickets for the Tigers the last two years at the old place and the first year at the new place. So I didn't really drop them entirely. But the new place fucked us; same price for worse seats, so I stopped after the first year.

Once you stop going to the games all you have is TV, and when your team is bad (3 years ago 1 game away from worst record ever) there isn't much reason to watch them on TV.

A Yankee fan has no clue what 19 years of poor baseball is like.

I don't mind the parade so much as the bagpipes that are in it.

Now it's really fucking loud opera. I love a good opera, but not thundering into my head when I'm trying to do other shit.

Oh, and Happy Leif Erickson Day, everyone!!

I love Girardi, but I'm not sure if he's ready to handle a veteran squad. I used to think these overpaid assholes needed to be kicked in the ass by someone like Sweet Lou, but I'm not so sure anymore. Maybe we should just keep Torre and give him some fucking pitching and fewer power hitters. He doesn't know what to do with an overstacked lineup. And his managing-without-managing style doesn't do much when things get bad with the lineup. He's great at keeping players calm and focused and taking the heat from the press, but when things are bad, he doesn't do anything but keep players calm and let them work it out themselves. That shit doesn't always work.
I think you should keep Torre. But either way I'll take Lou or Torre and you can have Hargrove and a bag full of money. What a pile of crap that guy is. He's almost as bad as Bob Melvin.

Quote:
He must go. He fucking sucks. And you know why? Because he puts up all his big numbers against average to below average pitchers. I don't know why no one talks about this. The guy cannot hit quality pitching. It's not his head. He doesn't choke. He's just not a very good hitter against superior pitching. That's why it looks like he chokes in the playoffs -- it's because he's facing quality starter after quality starter.
Welcome to the club. He has sucked in playoff games for almost 15 years. I watched him hit as many pop-ups during the playoffs as Griffey. He can hit it over the wall when you don't need him to, but when there's a guy on base, expect a pop-up.

Marathon man

While training for the NYC Marathon, Lance appears to have put on some weight and generally let himself go after his cycling career.

They only know 13 years, from 1982-1994.
