Pyjamas. The term you're looking for is "the cat's pyjamas."

" bee's knees - 1923, a survivor of a fad around this year for slang terms denoting "excellence" and based on animal anatomy. Also existed in the more ribald version bee's nuts. Other versions that lasted through the century are cat's whiskers (1923), cat's pajamas, cat's meow. More obscure examples are canary's tusks, cat's nuts and flea's eyebrows. The linguistic custom was still alive in Britain at the end of the century, as attested by the appearance of dog's bollocks in 1989. Bee's knee was used from 1797 for "something insignificant." "

Slave's vote is suddenly in contention.
A Pittsburgh-based group called Fuck the Vote claims it's offering sex to would-be Bush voters in return for their signed pledges to vote against the president in November. Link.
- Staffers for Republican Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell—who, theoretically, are prime targets for FTV—will be monitoring the group if it ventures across the border.
That's got to be some kind of record for cock-blocking.

I'm in a swing state so I have to pass, but someone really should tell Club.
Anyone want to bet you start seeing SS change his stripes on Politics so he can pledge to vote for Kerry?
edit always remember to read the "re" line.

I happen to have met Mike Wallace (fortunately, not to be the subject of one of his stories, or at least, not in a bad way). The guy's a total ass. The only thing surprising about his arrest for this type of thing is that it didn't happen 30 years ago.

Terrell Owens is an ass. But, was he being homophobic here?
From the NYT, http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/11/sp...es.html?8hpib:
Quote:
NYT
On Tuesday, team officials opened The Philadelphia Inquirer to a headline that said: "Owens Dances Around Questions About Sex." The headline referred to a question-and-answer article in the September issue of Playboy magazine. The interviewer stated that Jeff Garcia, the former San Francisco quarterback with whom Owens had a contentious relationship, has "denied media rumors he's gay." Owens was then asked, "What do you think?"
Owens replied: "Like my boy tells me: 'If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat, by golly, it is a rat.' "
Speaking with reporters after Tuesday morning's practice, Owens repeated those words, but he said that the interview was only a "loose conversation" and that "everybody is going to make a big deal out of it, but it wasn't like I came out and said Jeff was gay." He said that Garcia had a girlfriend when the two played together in San Francisco.
Garcia, who now plays with the Cleveland Browns, said he would not respond to "ridiculous, untrue allegations." Rita Addessa, executive director of the Pennsylvania Lesbian and Gay Task Force, called on Owens to make a public apology.
"The equating of gay men to vermin is appalling," Addessa said from Philadelphia. "We need to encourage the Eagles and Owens to make a public apology and for the Eagles to publicly discipline Owens. These comments that equate gay men to some inferior life form do real harm, creating a cultural environment which justifies violence against gay and lesbian people."
|
Was he really likening homosexuals to rodents? If he had said, "If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck," would it have been so bad?
I can see their point. Why would he use "rat" instead of duck? That is clearly negative (rats being bad and disgusting, ducks being neutral?). But, it sounds to me like he just heard the saying that way growing up and it wasn't necessarily intended to be negative.
Here's my favorite part of the article, though:
Quote:
NYT
Asked if he was aware of Owens's inflammatory remarks, Reid said, "I don't read Playboy."
|
That's a new one. I guess he buys it for the pictures.
Oh yeah, and people who take photos like this, shouldn't be talking about other people's sexuality in a negative way:

A partner at my old firm was interviewed on 60 Minutes by Mike Wallace, and spoke of the experience at a firm meeting shortly thereafter. His assessment was the same. I don't remember his exact words (and I'm sure he didn't say it like this), but the impression I came away with was, "Mike Wallace is a total prick".
In other news, there's a blown-up taxi outside the MetLife building right now. Between that and the column in the NYT today about how AlQuaida (that's not the right spelling, is it?) has the capacity -- or at the very least is looking to get the capacity -- to detonate a nuclear device that would, if set off in Times Square, annihilate all of midtown (leaving my children orphans, as both their parents work in midtown).
Ah, to live in TCOTU...

Inferior life form? Since when do we as humans get to designate which life forms are superior and which are inferior?
