He has really regressed since that movie. He was excellent in it. At least it proves he has talent (but refuses to take parts that would display it).
Although his checking account has not regressed as a result of his taking those roles.

(6DoS gross: $6m. I, Robot: Will Smith pay: $28M + 10-20% of gross)

It was, but that's because it's so much more fun watching Ali be Ali. Aren't there like two movies (the lesser one being When We Were Kings) that did a better job with Ali's life with actual footage?

I remember there was a documentary, but I can't remember the title. I always put documentaries in a different class. It's easy for someone to play themself.

from IMDB there are lots of them- including "the Greatest" which seems to include real fight scenes with scripted storytelling. but maybe this is the one
  • A.k.a. Cassius Clay (1970)

.K.A. Cassius Clay (1970) was a documentary made during the time that Muhammed Ali was on "hiatus" from the world of professional boxing due to his strong religious beliefs. The film makers use a lot of valuable achieved footage, interviews with the Champ himself and those that were heavily involved in his life. A lot of classic Malcolm X footage can be found in this film as well. If you want to get a look into the life of the "Greatest Heavyweight Boxer of all time" then I advise you to watch this film. No dramatical theatrics. Just the man himself.

I would also recommend THE GREATEST as well. If you want to get a full picture of Muhammed Ali. I wish that somebody would do a film of his post-Zaire boxing career. Now that would be a fascinating film to see the "Elvis" phase of Muhammed Ali. I've read Ferdie Pacheco's book. Someone in Hollywood needs to make a big screen version of it.

I saw When We were KIngs before I had kids and stopped seeing (mainstream) movies (other than G, X, XX, XXX or XXXX) and it is fantastic. I have it on my list to buy. A documentary look at the Rumble in the Jungle and the months preceding it. Awesome. Despite the differing contexts, hard to watch Will Smith's Ali in the backdrop of that memory.

A young Ali truly reminded me of my self when he said:

I'm young, I'm handsome, I'm fast, I'm pretty and can't possibly be beat.

Indeed.

There's an Ali movie that's better than When We Were Kings?

Related subject -- I watched an HBO documentary about Sugar Ray Robinson last night. Fascinating. And the so-called "perfect left hook" really was.

Perhaps, although if I had the same breadth (and length) of sextracurricular activities available to me as the Hedgehog, poker would be the last thing on my mind. Poking otoh.........ba dum ching!

Of course. But (1) documentaries are usually dry, no matter who they're about and (2) movies based on real people usually overplay that person's good and bad points and over-dramatize and sensationalize their life. The movie Ali couldn't successfully do either.

And actors usually get huge credit for playing a real person well. Will Smith did a good job with Ali. But he was in a tough spot because Ali is already larger than life. 100 times more charismatic than Will Smith on his best day.

E.g., Keanu Reeves.

This leads me to the next topic. One Ocean View. It's a short (6 episodes) reality show in the same vein as The Real World. I know Usman. And Usman is the most compelling, vain, ridiculous person I know. You must watch. He arrived via speed boat in a suit with a Pink, banker shirt.

Here are some examples of what he said in last night's episode:

1. Every day is the best day of my life because I truly believe I get better looking every day. When I wake up, it's the best day yet because I know I'm better looking than I was yesterday. No, I'm completely serious. [And he is -- completely serious, that is.]

2. Let's go out. I hope there aren't going to be any fat girls there.

3. You kidding, dude? There are four girls in this house. We shouldn't have to clean anything.

4. [In response to what his goals were for the summer, after hearing people say shit like, "Make new friends" or "Be open to a new, meaningful relationship"] I'm looking to pick up girls.

5. [On phone] Hello? It's Usman, that handsome guy you met at the bar tonight...the one with the nice house.

6. Why do I get models? Because I'm good looking and rich. That's why.

7. [Something about liking his women barefoot and pregnant.]

And no, he's not kidding. Here's to you, Usman. May this be the last time you are photographed without a beer in its original container.

I think it's either:

Muhammad Ali - The Whole Story (1996)

or

Muhammad Ali - Through the Eyes of the World (2001)

But I'm leaning towards the first one.

How does this show work? Will he be simply voted out of the house, or will the women on the show be able to physically beat the shit out of him before kicking him off the show?
