What is the CBC Music Channel like?
I have a big problem with listening to talk radio, which is the main reason that FM radio bothers me so much. I would fucking throttle the entire KROQ morning crew (whatever the fuck their names are) if I ever ran into them on the street. So fucking annoying. So I'm not paying attention to any of the talk channels you suggested. The only morning dj I have ever liked was Dickie Barrett. But he was kicked out for abusing his assistant and generally being an ass, from what I hear.

The Euros will win, if only because their costumes are nicer.

I have not seen the costumes this year so I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not, but do you remember a few years ago when the US won in those horribly tacky shirts with picture frames all over them? Ugh. It was painful to watch.

I was not around when this debate began, but based on what you are saying, I don't disagree with your main point. In fact, I'm totally on board with your last paragraph. But there are white kids in Eden Prairie who know the Dead Prez. And in Golden Valley and Maple Grove and White Bear Lake and Coon Rapids and all of the unfortunately named, predominantly white suburbs of the Twin Cities. They are a minority of the population there, just as all people who listen to underground music are a minority of the population. Otherwise, the music would be, by definition, mainstream. There is a strong underground hip hop community in Minneapolis, thanks in part to the Rhymesayers crew (whose most famous rapper, Slug of Atmosphere) is white. Because of them and their collaborations, we get to see lots of underground hip hop crews like Def Jux and Living Legends come through town, and their is good support for underground hip hop in general, including the groups you mentioned, each of whom Ihave seen more than once in Minneapolis, generally playing to decent or good-sized crowds. But I think a large part of the Rhyemsayers fan base is white kids from Minneapolis and inner ring suburbs. And I know that it drives some of those rappers crazy, while at the same time they appreciate the support.

I believe Slug has one white parent and one black.

The counter, apparently, is to not get settled in or excel in the place you work. People who move around in their jobs a lot seemingly recover their edge.
I, frankly, find myself looking for more new stuff to do and experience as I approach my mid-30s, so I'm not necessarily convinced by this guy's conclusions.

I think it somewhat depends on how much of a music-person you were to begin with. Most casual listeners I know tend to be stuck in some past era or other. More of the real music-types continue to expand.

Sirius has hockey. Every game. Basketball too. And football. As best as I can tell, XM has baseball and that's it.

Because Sirius doesn't play Kelly Clarkson on 12 stations all day. Plus Hair Nation is great and you get NFL and like 10 ESPNs.
Unfortunately I can only get XM here in the city on the computer so I know first hand about the Kelly Clarkson.
But I have both and I really think I like the Sirius programming better even though XM has better range.

NWA and Ice T aren't really hip hop. They're Gangsta rap. I guess, arguably, early Ice T could be considered west coast hip hop, but I don't put him in that category.
Black-Eyed Peas started off as a solid hip hop group and then they sold the fuck out, did Sprite commercials, brought Fergie in, recorded "Let's Get it Started" and now they're a joke. Behind the Front is a solid hip hop cd.

You know what's fucked up for me is that although I appreciate eclectic music a guilty part of me a) loves 80s music still and b) loves current top 40. and top 40 has changed a bit over the years.....but I still like Ciara and Nelly and even Justin's new single isn't bad.

This is good to know. I am starting to get bored with XM.
OTOH, broadcast sports has absolutely no interest for me. Even sports I really like to watch, I have absolutely no interest in listening to.
As for baseball, I believe that listening to it on the radio is possibly the only way to make the infinitely boring more so.

All subjective personal preference with respect to programming. I like a certain type of alternative music (not alternative as in "alternative", but mainstream alternative, if you get my drift) and XM does not seem to get me. The alternative station (Fred? Lucy? Some dumb name like that) doesn't play what I like. Instead I believe they play a bunch of Tool ripoffs and Korn. I like Radiohead and similar whiny English (or faux-British) bands. Not a good matchup. That is all.
Also, as Slave notes, Sirius has the NFL and XM has the other sports that I don't care about at all.

Upon initial contact with Ice-T's music, I had envisioned him to be a most ill-mannered and psychologically unstable man.

It's not just live broadcasts, but lots of analysis. Maybe too much analysis. And college games. Plus you get traffic and weather for anywhere.
Oh, and BBC. I love the accents of the British DJs. I think it's BBC. Some British station. I like it.

Listening to him speak (at an actual university paid-for speech) would confirm that impression.
