But not the above.

Your penance is a thousand Our Fathers and a few thousand Hail Marys.
Prior to being thrown out of a catholic school as a child, I went to a few confessions. They'd line us up and we'd wait to go in and tell our sins. The all time best was this crazy kid who'd make insane shit up and say it loud enough for us outside to hear. (He was nuts -- like probably dead now nuts.)

He once told the monsignor he intentionally killed his cat. The priest in turn told him to say a rosary. A rosary. That was it. Today, that kid would be explaining himself to a detective. (As anyone saying that should.)

No, I was never molested. They did, however, ask me to be an altar boy. I'm not sure I even dignified that with an answer.

I thrived much more in public and private schools.

Re: Objectively intelligent.

Scary, but it seems to me that this new conservatism has a certain frailty that acknowledges that if it doesn't lie about what it's up to, it won't be popular.

Umm I read half then stopped. There is a conference that US and Britain are toast? What do you want people to take from this?

Take whatever you want. If you don't want to read it, hey, Bob's your uncle.

BTW, Appelbaum's husband was recently the Foreign Minister of Poland.

Seriously? Tell us why you posted this. No one else here worked at DOJ- we don’t have your insights.

Because I thought it was an interesting perspective on new conservatism as a more international phenomenon, rather than a narrow Trumpy perspective.

A conference of some people. A conference. Do you get that doesn’t speak to the world? Rhetorical, I mean, I know you don’t. Sad.

I wasn't trying to speak to the world, but other than that your input is fantastic. Thank you.

It was a decent article, but I’m puzzled as to how you reached that takeaway.

I think the new nationalism appeals to be people who’d lose out in broader multinational coalitions and expanded trade groups. They’re trying to hold onto their market share. Kind of like companies in areas that are seeing growth and competition from outside. Lots of second rate cities in Rust Belt have this issue. The locals try to protect their captured markets. This is why so many train lines lie dormant in places like Pennsylvania. Locals with businesses sometimes benefit by keeping things insular, incestuous.

While this is true, I'm always puzzled when it gets described without mention the global oligarchs that back it.

Why? You think it's not well known that there are rich people who back conservative movements?
