It seem pretty obvious to this San Franciscan that it's either specifically directed against gays, or discloses a fundamental belief that men are superior to women. That's what the SNL skit was getting at, and yet it's been appropriated and somehow made appropriate.
It bothers me when the crowd goes nuts over it. What other third-grade mentalities are going to become the common coin of modern political discourse? Cooties? I'm-rubber-you're-glue? No backsies?

I see it as being less of an intentional slur against gays than it is a simple, direct, in-your-face-you-PC-slugs insult or taunt to Dems, thrown out for laughs because everyone knows it enrages its targets. As for "men being better", I don't think people get that out of it at all - it's more of a "a guy should be a guy" sort of thing. They would laugh just as much, I think, if some woman was called "manly-girl".
In any event, I think that's the way it's meant. I know that's not the way it's perceived, and I wish he'd stop using it.
I think the next childish wave will be to yell "Halliburton" or "Bush Lied" whenever more intelligent thoughts stop flowing.
Oh, wait . . .

Pretty sure that's already in the republican platform.
As for girly men, why is he even using a line that's not his, and was poking fun at him in the first place? (Or was it poking fun at Rainier Wolfcastle)

And that may well have been written by Al Franken.

No, I'm not bothered and I think you're reading WAY too much into it.
It's used in the SNL sketch and IRL as "wimpy". He's just playing off the image people have of him as the Teutonic Muscleman. From the same guy who thought it was amazing that he's come so far in this country despite the fact that "he sounds like a Nazi". Not worth getting worked up about.

Wha? IRL? I don't hang out with a particularly PC crowd, especially here at work, but I'm having a hard time imagining "girly men" being used in the presence of gay men or women, even as a self-deprecating joke.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended by it. I just think it's a lame joke. Maybe that's because I'm not effeminate (except for my command of wedding etiquette) and wasn't subjected to schoolyard taunts about being girly. It concerns me that it gets cheers from adults. It's the crowd's response that concerns me. It's also a sign that even the moderates in the GOP do not extend olive branches to gays and lesbians --- instead, they get this at the convention.

It was clearly arranged by Hillary. She is ready for her inner lesbian to emerge.

"You've got to tell the (convention delegates) what they want to hear in order to win them over. Politicians always talk the way it fits into their agenda."
And they say that Europe doesn't understand American-style politics.

I thought you had already designated "girly-man" as the Republican sneer at gays? Pick a story and stick with it, Demo-Boy.

I always thought it was a Hanz and Franz allusion from SNL. Combo of self-deprecation and teasing of his critics.
That said, I think it's embraced by others for less erudite reasons, and he should stop.
