Didn't you read "Alive" in HS? Group of people ona plane crash in the Andes. They start eating the dead and dying. Eventually 2 "separate" to get help. W/O that they would have just stayed there until they were all dead, and eating each other.

Yeah, Ty some of us in the office have been watching this story closely all week. Most of us had decided that we would not let our husband leave a wife and 2 kids alone in a car to go get help. Some of us would have set the car on fire.

I've been left in the car while my dad went to get help a few times after some unfortunate misreadings of gas guages. ("Oh sure, don't worry. We can make it to the next town.") His "never ever ever hitchhike" rule apparently doesn't apply to himself. Each time a helpful trucker picked him up, took him to town, and he managed to find someone else to drive him back.
BTW, I wasn't there for the most recent trucker rescue, but I have it on good information that BMW's roadside assitance is useless in the middle of the night in the middle of January on US 287 about ten miles outside of Vernon, Texas. Also, hazard lights run out the battery if they're left on too long. And, of course, the gas guage is suspect. Oh, and apparently there are some pretty cool amenities in modern rigs.

Any can also burn up all of the oxygen in your car and replace it with carbon monoxide which kills you. Win-win. You can be warm when you die.

It is also a bad idea to drive down those roads marked as dashes with "open in Summer only" next to them when a winter storm is brewing.
I'd bet he knew leaving was dangerous; while it decreased his odds, it increased those of his family (they are saved if either the car is spotted or he gets help; he, of course, is only saved if he finds someone or someone finds him). |
