Hell, my criticism of The Notorious F.A.T. shouldn't have bothered her at all. She doesn't fucking know me. There is no reason to value my opinion and any sane person would have said, "I and my husband disagree," and that would have been the end of it. And, although I've met ugly girls who think they're hot, I have yet to meet a hot girl who doesn't know it on some level. The ones who are and know it don't let insults about their looks bother them that much, unless it comes from someone they care about and/or respect.

He wasn't cruel to you. Unless it's like that torts thing where if you toss a supersoft pillow at someone, and it hits the person's shoulder, and the shoulder breaks because of some obscure bone disorder, you could be liable for the injuries resulting from the assault even though it wouldn't have injured the average person.

I think in the textbook case, it was a skull.

I will take your point and Thurgreed's and just add this: fwiw, I don't think I have solicited any comments on my appearance in a long time from men because I think most of them subscribe to your theory. So that is why, if I really cared, I would go to my female friends. One in particular. She is the only person I will shop with because she's the only person I know who will be completely honest with me about whether something looks good or looks like shit. Once in awhile my wife asks if she looks good in an outfit that she is thinking of wearing that night. I dread this.

If I don't like the way she looks in something, I'm honest but gentle and positive. So, I don't say "ew" or "no" or "you look like a fat stumpy Asian chick with floppy tits." I say something like "why don't you were ..... instead -- that'd look really good." And that's fine with her.

The part I dread is when I say she does look good. Because inevitably she thinks I'm being "nice" (i.e., lying), or maybe she only asked my opinion because she already had doubts. And this leads to endless outfit changes, would this look better, how about that....

This is as high-maintenance as she gets, which is basically nothing. But still -- don't ask me if you don't really care about the answer.
