MSFT to offer subscription anti-virus software and service.

And, in an unrelated story, MSFT also announced all future versions of Windows would place each user's entire WINNT directory on the Internet as a shared network folder.

You knew this was coming. Let's see how they compare to Norton, McAfee, et al.

As for the other issue, I can't even begin to comtemplate hot dangerous that is going to be.

MSFT May 5, 2005: "You can always tell when you're on a Mac or when you're on a PC. Just take your applications and stick them in there and see if they run."

MSFT May 19, 2005: You can always tell when you're on a Mac or when you're on an XBox 360. Just take your games and stick them in there and see if they run.

Confirmed

Apple to switch to Intel chips by 2007. Looks like there will never be a PowerBook G5.

More here.

Attention Excel gurus.

Anyone know whether it's possible to get a cell to display its contents differently depending on whether the calculated value in the cell exceeds some set value, or the value of another cell? I've got three columns of figures that accrue based on formulae, and I want the funny-shaped letters ("numbers") to turn red or something when the value goes over 208, 260, and 120 respectively.

This seems like the kind of thing that should be easy (i.e., display in purple all numbers in column E that exceed budgeted amount in column D, or display in red all formula results higher than 212 F degrees).

Hep a poor humanities major out. Winner gets a PM explaining the importance of 208, 260, and 120 respectively.

search help for "conditional formats" It explains most of it, in the usual vaguely helpful microsoft way.

Toledo surprises me. Not that I've been to Toledo, but shouldn't Boston or New York be on that list somewhere?

The survey was conducted by Bert Sperling, the owner of Sperling's BestPlaces, known for listing the most livable U.S. cities. Intel, which has spent millions marketing Wi-Fi to boost sales of its wireless chipsets, underwrites the project.

The survey looked at a number of factors, including the number of free and commercial hot spots (a location with a wireless access point); the number of ZIP codes in the region that had wired broadband available to the homes (which is needed to set up a home Wi-Fi network); the number of homes using Wi-Fi; and the number of wireless devices such as the BlackBerry being used by the population.

You've been thanked by PM, but I post here to express my embarrassment at how easy this was to do once I knew what it was called. Everything over 208 is in hot pink, thanks to you.

Usually the case with microsoft office. A treasure trove of useful features, almost none of which are easily discerned nor located. Indeed, the usual help search needs some googlization, because the best solution is typically about 5th on the list.

Oh for the days of manuals.

But I'll take no credit for anything hot pink.

What, no sharing of the importance of 208, 260, 120? Bitch.

Yeah, until you see that they rated hotspots based on population density, so that Toledo's two access points equate to an impressive 18.7 per 100K residents.

All kidding aside, Boston is pretty lame in terms of public wifi access.

Mad as Hell

I thought people here, especially the Mac people, would appreciate this:

Computer security guy fed up with Microsoft chronicles switching to Mac in his security blog.

Time Sheets for Small Office

Does anyone have any recommendations (or warnings) about software for time sheets that is geared to smaller offices?

Many thanks in advance.

My friend the solo uses Timeslips.

Also, check with your state or local bar to see if they have a office management advisory group. My local bar has such a group, and they have links to all of the various software vendors for things like accounting, time and billing, etc.

Old & busted: Google Maps w/ satellite view.

New hotness: Google Earth. (Requires minimum hardware, but makes you feel like you're in a fuckin' James Bond movie and are about to call in airstrikes. Get it now before they disable downloading again.)

ETA: I particularly recommend the Grand Canyon with terrain turned on.
