Most amusing was mandatory manor-family led morning prayer for the servants where the manor family prayed to God that the servants would be obedient, dutiful, and serve them humbly.

That actually was very usual, and makes more sense once you focus on the idea of "family" as it was meant prior to this century. The family wasn't a genetically related unit, it was a household and everyone in it, and the head of the "family" was ultimately responsible for the moral and physical wellbeing of everyone. So religious services were generally conducted by the head of house, and were required just as parents still often enforce religious training and practice on their children. The idea of an employer interfering in an adult's life to that extent - determining private schedules, passing judgment on private behavior, approving or disapproving marriage prospects & social activities, dictating the activities, education, employment, etc. of the servant's own children and kin, etc. - seems abhorrent now, but makes some sense if you think, as they did, that the servants are not essentially different from the children of the house in their dependence on the master and the nature of the master's obligations toward them. (The part most people don't get anymore is the notion of the master's obligations toward his servants, which tends to get glossed over in favor of noting only the dependence and obligations of the servants.)

Also real-life businessman husband expressing surprise that real-life doctor wife actually had the brains to figure out complex dinner party etiquette. That's another jackass I'd've targeted.

Hey, it's harder than it seems. I've seen perfectly intelligent people turned to jelly by the thought of having to figure out what fork to use, nevermind sorting out how to perform such basic maneouvers as eating salad with a knife and fork, eating dessert with a fork and spoon or eating fish with two forks (OK, that last isn't so simple). Nevermind the more complex social etiquette, such as turning table, signaling course changes, seating arrangements organized by both rank and compatibility, supervising the pouring coffee in the drawing room after dinner.

This is my reminder. I just missed these guys in Minneapolis a couple of weeks ago, and am very curious. I have read a bit about them, but would like to hear your persepctive.

However, I think the underlying premise of the show is pretty interesting (or I want to). I don't think men are used to overtly competing with each other for female attention like this anymore (while women are more used to the idea). Also interesting is that many of the guys seem to consider the women in the house basically interchangeable - if not Haley, then a hula chick, whatever, he still wins. Mind you, there weren't alternative guys floating about on Joe M like that (though I can't believe someone didn't try flirting with Paul, who seemed to me a much more interesting catch than Evan), but it was interesting to see.

Then again, I haven't watched the Bachelorette or any of the other "man bites dog" "now the shoe is on the other foot" dating shows, so maybe this isn't so weird.

If you ever get the chance to see the Emerson String Quartet perform either Shubert's Death and the Maiden or Barber's Adagio, don't miss it. I was transfixed pretty much the entire evening, and I can safely say that most of the rest of the audience was too. The Adagio was right before intermission, and that was a good call. I think everyone needed to catch their breath after that piece of music. Usually at this concert series, some patrons clear out after the first half, but everyone was back in their seat for Death and the Maiden. The concert started with a Beethoven string quartet (Op. 18, No.1), which was also excellent, which was followed by a more modern piece by Aitken, but the last two pieces were unbelievable.

I don't doubt the difficulty! But if I were a doctor, and entrusted with saving people's lives, I would expect that my partner wouldn't be surprised that I could at least study a book and memorize the rules. It was the "gee, I guess my wife isn't a moron!" patronizing thing that made me want to slap him.

But then, I wouldn't really slap him. I was raised to be a lady after all.

I have now been informed that Fischerspooner were quite popular with a small hipster circle in Manhattan about 1.5 to 2 years ago and, consequently, are now has-beens. Say it--the girl is a total bitch. She will never find the right man because she is too good for all of them.

Anyone notice that it was 35 minutes into the show before Monica was onscreen? I guess she didn't test well last week.

I do think that Brian (who was a total doofus) got a bum rap for quitting at the ceremony. Maybe he thought that by taking himself out of the competition he would be giving another guy the chance to stay. Instead they called him a wimp, a chicken, and not a real man. I actually gave him points for what he did. But what's up with the hair?
