If you are not in a position where you have the ability to correct the person (i.e., the person is not your child or subordinate), your failure to do so is not an affirmation and would not reasonably be interpreted as complicity by anyone else.

There is a look you can adopt that is clearly one of disapproval and discomfort. In most situations it's best if you only wear that look briefly enough so that you don't trigger a confrontation or attempted defense, but long enough so that the teller gets that it's not cool. But this would only work when you're in the same room, obviously.

My son has a friend who is constantly making vaguely anti-black racist statements. Once he leaves I try and point out to my son that the things the kid says are wrong, but my kid sees them as more innocent. kids are tough to raise. maybe I should call the kid on them......

PS the lying down Paigow was to distinguish from regular Paigow, and because I figured out how to do it. I couldn't do it on an angle though

When I lived in Dallas, a lot (!) of people would make homophobic remarks in my presence. It became evident after a while that at least some of the people my age were unaware that people might be offended, so I spoke up. Just kind of pointed out to them that I don't appreciate that kind of humor and that I have a lot of gay friends, etc. It actually was usually a productive thing to do and (I think) led some people to think further about what they were saying and why. Of course some people just assumed I was gay, which was okay too since that sort of thing doesn't bother me. I never had the conversation with the partner who was completely un-PC, because I knew it wouldn't make a difference. What with his "christian" ideals.

Whiffaloopsa- I was offering a possible reason why Sebastian might seeing him as the greatest evildoer in history or whatever he called him. Personally, I have several friend that are middle eastern actors.
