As an aside, I have snowboarded on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, which was totally intense. Not much snowcover, and it is a volcanic mountain with all sorts of jagged rocks to avoid. You have to drive nearly all the way to the summit (almost 14,000 ft), and you have to take turns serving as the "chair lift" waiting at the bottom in the truck.

Highly recommended if you want to add a little thrill seeking to your tropical vacation. Just remember to sport some massive SPF on your face!

No, I think most dads are thinking more along the lines of "Todd looks too robust for Mary... I think she should stick with Irving. And she should definitely avoid Patrick; he looks like he's packing some serious heat. Just look at the bulge in his Dockers. Second the SPF thing. I biked down some mountain over in HI and you peel off layers as you go down. When I ended the trip, I was sunburned silly, but I never realized it because I had been so cold for the early portion of the ride that I thought the sun burning my flesh felt good.

Teenage heartbreak and generally dealing with members of the opposite sex are part of the process of growing up and becoming an adult. I know women who I envision being the kind of women whose parents were protective in those ways. I envision that having been the case because they are helpless, spineless and unable to have meaningful healthy adult relationships with normal men, often because they're involved with ones who treat them like shit.

It's one thing to protect one's children from abuse, disease, pregnancy, low self-esteem, etc. It's another entirely to try to make all your kids' decisions for them and prevent them from ever becoming self-sufficient adults who can make their own decisions about what sort of people to get involved with.

Here's a related question for the men here: let's say that you know for sure that you don't want to be a father. Maybe you just know that you don't want to be one now, or with your current SO. Maybe you even are about to get a vasectomy, or something like that. Whatever the background, you don't want a kid now (and maybe never). But your SO gets pregnant surreptitiously. Even if you decide to leave the woman, do you not want to be a part of the kids' life? Even though I am pretty sure that I don't want to have kids ever, I don't know that, if I were to become a father, I could really not be involved in that kids' life. Hell, you're going to be involved financially. Given that constant reminder, I don't know if I've got the will power to not be a father to the thing.

Confidential to a woman I know: if you got pregnant accidentally because you weren't on birth control because you want to have children really badly and your husband forgot to pull out, that's not an accident.

Finally, all this surreptitious pregnancy talk has got me thinking about Mamma Mia. Here I go again. Was it ever revealed who the daughter's father was?

I didn't suggest anything of the sort. I just suggested that there are concerns that parents have when their kids start having romantic/sexual relationships, and the teenaged angst factor is one of them. Parents don't want to see their kids hurt. Everyone knows that sex and romance can lead to pain (and the dreaded angst), and the only way that you learn that is by having to go through it. Parents know they're going to have to let their kids get hurt at some point, but that doesn't mean they have to like it.

What if Sebby's daughter wants to go out with a Lord of the Rings geek? Or the Lizard Boy (not to be mistaken for our own Reptile Boy, Shape Shifter)? Or, heaven forbid, some nerd on the debate team who thinks he wants to be a lawyer and gets her on the academic decathalon team? Sebby is going to have to deal with the fact that his kid is likely going to be hurt by someone he could give a rat's ass about, and that, likely, she's testing the values that he's tried to raise her with. Doesn't mean that Sebby is going to not let her date these guys, it jsut means that he's not going to like it.

Well anything can happen, but right now the Lightning have 6 points up on the Thrash, plus three games in hand, so you need to make up 8-10 points on them in 30 games, which ain't gonna be easy. As for whether they can catch the Isle, or the Habs, that's a different story. I'd say it's likely that they will if they get hot (I think Montreal's about to fall into slumpsville). But even with that, you're talking about playing the Leafs, Flyers, Devils or Sens in the first round, and that's a very tall order.
