I don't know much about the Comcast DVR, but Tivo is the Apple of the DVR world.* Intuitive interface that even my mother can navigate; bulletproof OS; top notch ergonomics. As far as features, Tivo doesn't just schedule recordings based on time and channel; it searches for occurences of shows at different times and on different channels. So when Fox moves Arrested Development, it finds it and records it. I don't think the cable-company DVRs have advanced beyond the VCR with a hard disk stage, which Tivo surpassed four years ago.
*I.e., Has anyone cornered you at a cocktail party to tell you how much they love their Comcast DVR? Tivo and Apple people are like zombies. The slow-moving ones from the first "Dawn of the Dead," not these new-fangled Speedy Gonzales zombies.

My dvr will record a show even if it is on at a different time of the week than usual. But here is something it doesn't do, which is esp. important when it comes to sporting events. Let's say golf is on the schedule from 3-6. The DVR will stop recording precisely at 6, even if there is a playoff and it goes until 6:15. This has annoyed my husband on more than one occasion. Does tivo record until the end, even if unscheduled?

YES. Awesome cover. Sting's "Little Wing", OTOH, sucked.
On a completely different note, Anthrax doing PE's "Bring tha Noize" was pretty cool.
Johnny Cash doing Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" was badass, better IMHO that his celebrated cover of "Hurt."
Best covers I've ever seen live:
Soundgarden covering Body Count's "Copkiller" at Lollapalooza 1992
Soundgarden covering Led Zep's "Black Dog" (same show)
Red Hot Chili Peppers covering Hendrix's "Manic Depression" (same show; what can I say, that day was one of the best concerts I have ever seen)
Rage Against the Machine covering "How I Could Just Kill A Man", Philadelphia, 2000 (I think)
De la and Tribe together doing "Me Myself and I" (is this really a cover?); show at my college, 1994

You have to adjust a setting when you set the recording. Tivo, and for that matter all DVRs, assume that TV Guide (or whomever they use for schedules) is telling them the truth vis-a-vis start and stop times. No content provider that I'm aware of provides live updating of the schedule, or connects that with a DVR, yet.

I can't believe I'm responding to so many music posts (again, I remind you that I didn't know who Robert Plant was until last year -- although I knew the name and that he was a musician), but this brings to mind the scene from Wayne's World in the guitar store where there's a sign that says "No Stairway to Heaven". Even a rube like me could get that joke!

Adjust the setting in what way? To tell it not to stop recording ever? Or is there some way to adjust the setting such that it will stop recording when the event is actually over? It sounds like not the second one, and the first is not so helpful but I guess would be better than nothing.

You can set recording to go over the time allotted by TV guide or whoever releases TV schedules.
My TiVo love knows no bounds now that I have the whole thing set up on my wireless network instead of over the phone lines. Nearly instantaneous updates, I'm not tripping over the phone lines, and it doesn't take 30 minutes to download the schedules anymore.

I don't get it.
Joke.
The only comment I have on any of this is JJ Cale, and that's not much of a comment. This thread is quite the reminder to change out the CDs in the car, though. Thanks!

Adjust it to stop recording maybe ten to thirty minutes after the show is supposed to be over.

I think there is a way to manually adjust it so that it will record on that day from a particular time to another time, like 3-6:30, and so in the event the scheduled programming runs overtime, it will pick it up. So the first one.

Guesstimation, then.
They really should get on this issue. I don't so much watch the sports, but this seems sorta important to those who do.

I assume that after that incident last year your husband sat you down for a music education.
If he didn't, I'd bet your horse trainer can help.

An initial charge for the box ($149-$249), which most cable cos. don't charge
A $12.95/mo. or $299 lifetime subscription, vs. whatever the monthly cost from comcast is.
possibly two tuners (Time warner has this), which means recording one thing and watching another, or recording two things.
------------
On Tivo, you can specify in a program how early to start or late to end the recording, so you can add 1, 2, 5, 15, 30 mins. or more to the end of any show. Not hard not to watch it if the game ends and your late local news comes on. It's an issue only if you have no space left on your drive or there's another show you want to record during the overrun, which you'd be SOL on anyway, unless you get Atticus's super special DirecTivo, which has two tuners.
