random lifestyle report

http://www.abcny.org/pdf/report/lawSchoolDebt.pdf

[NYC bar association report on how bad law school debt has gotten, recommending that debt relief programs should not just focus on public interest practitioners (where debt relief as currently offered seems to have only a spotty effect on encouraging new grads to sign up) but on new graduates in private practice as well, because the burn-out among newer lawyers kept in private practice jobs they hate by their debt burden has gotten so bad that it is generally undermining the profession.]

Add Sweet Jane and Jane Says to the list of songs which should never be played again.

BTW, a new Dolly Parton tribute album came out a few months ago, and I'm liking it. Melissa Ethridge, Sinead O'Connor, Norah Jones, Joan Osborne, Alison Krauss.

I love Dolly Parton. She has one of my favorite quotes of all time: "I made a lot of money, and I need a lot of money, because it costs a lot of money to look this cheap."

She covered Stairway to Heaven a few years ago.
I like Dolly too.

Speaking of whom, and this will probably get me kicked off the board, but, THE FIRST TIME I HEARD IT, not the thousandth time when I wanted to strangle someone when it came on the radio, I liked Whitney Houston's cover of I will always love you. The chills again. (The first time I heard it.)

Well, there's knowing softballs, and there's clueless softballs, and, while I hate to hit the knowing ones, you can't be certain.

Author of The Da Vinci Code is staring down the barrel of a copyright infringement lawsuit. {PLF disclosure: interracial bukkake.}

The author of The Da Vinci Legacy (1983) says he's got dead-bang evidence of substantial similarity, including the repeated error of portraying Da Vinci as having written on parchment (in fact, he wrote on linen sheets). Of course, this part is a crock of shit:

Quote:
He says he has not yet filed a lawsuit because he and his lawyers are sure that Doubleday will settle and that any settlement would include a gag order. "I'm not ready to shut up," he says.

I really like Dolly -- and I vaguely remember the "it takes a lot of money to look this cheap" quip. I think she's just adorable.

She was just precious in that movie 9 to 5 -- kind of a dumb movie, but she was cute in it.

And now for something completely different...

17-year-old high school senior Candace Parker beat out five male competitors to win the Slam Dunk contest of the McDonald's High School All-American Game.

Sounds like a FB Dollywood trip has entered its initial planning phase.

Los Lobos doing Traffic's "Mr. Fantasy" is the best cover I've ever seen live.
Try SRV's version of Third Stone From the Sun on the remastered version of Soul to Soul. Nuts.

Widespread Panic doing Low Spark is pretty damn cool.

I saw the Soundgarden version of cop killer. Lousy song, but interesting to see Cornell wail it over a line of cops just below the stage.

Rage's version of Kick Out the Jams is pretty good, but its an easy cover.

The Dead's cover of I Fought the Law was always awesome, as was Weir's wicked jam on whatever Chuck Berry tune he pulled out...

...just kidding.

No, really, my Bobby favorite was "Corinna"

"Corinna, shake it up baby, shake it now, shake it yeah, nah nah nah..." Like a car accident.

Another reason why I like Dolly -- can you imagine anything tackier than Dollywood? She revels in her tackiness, and I admire her for it. Good on her, I say -- she knows her audience, and she's made herself a killing.

(Reminds me of a story JK Rowling told about an American woman in LA who commented to JKR at a book-signing, "I'm glad you're rich!" whereas in Britain, no one would have said such a thing; the most effusive comment would have been something like "well done" or some such pablum.)

Graceland is pretty tacky. I could not get over that chintz-gone-wild billiard room. I think it may have had a name, like the Jungle room (but not, obviously, the Jungle Room, because that is a different room).

But I agree with your sentiment.

I very sleepily, with some of the after affects of the night before likely running through my bloodstream, drove 400 miles from Ft. It's as close to hypnotized as I've ever been, and I can say that while the experience was interesting, it's not something I'd ever want to repeat. The Doors Greatest Hits on repeat during a sleep deprived drive through the desert pretty much cured me of any and all fascination with the Doors.
Wow, I had the exact same experience in college. Except I was passed out drunk, and I think there were women involved. Naturally, whenever I hear the Doors, I go to my very happy place.

Reminds me of a story - when WH came out with that cover, Dolly gave an interview in which she said that WH did just a beautiful job, and was so talented, and Dolly was so glad that she was bringing it to a new audience and giving it a new life, and how flattered she was that WH liked the song enough to cover it.

WH, when made aware of these comments, apparently said (roughly): "that song is mine now, I sing it better than she ever did and Dolly had better not fucking sing it anymore, because it's MINE."

Which just goes to show that neither dignity and good breeding, nor vulgarity, have anything to do with how big your wig is, how much eye shadow you wear or the number of rhinestones on your unitard.
