But according to The Dowd Report he bet on the Reds to win every game that they played (almost, during the time period that was documented, Dowd found only one occasion where the Reds played but Rose chose not to place a wager on the game)... if wanting the team you manage to win every game it plays is bad and self-interested then every manager (well, hopefully all of them) is guilty of that.
I also seem to recall that his gambling wasn't entirely profitable -- in other words, the guy made some shit bets a lot of the time.
Punish a piss-poor gambler who bet on his own team to win every night and lost his fucking shirt? Rose may be a moron at times, but I don't think he ever intended to tarnish the "golden" image of baseball (Hi Darryl Strawberry!!) and they should let him in because his stats bear it out.
p.s. I think "Shoeless" Joe Jackson was railroaded....that poor illiterate fuck. He played that Series to win (look at the stats). Just because he knew about the fix should not have set him up for an eternity in banned from baseball hell.

How I learned to stop procrastinating and love the law

Do something that enables you to have a measure of creativity or control. Better yet, creativity and control. Granted, I have a somewhat non-traditional practice, but I spend my days doing work I enjoy and I have the freedom (now) to only represent clients I like.
The drudgery of law enables me to do something I enjoy every day -- to talk to people I genuinely like and help them acheive things they could not without my help. Helping people make their dreams come true is a pretty great way to spend your days.

OK, so I need to switch jobs? I was thinking of somehting more like a vente cup of caffeine or more managemable than the months long event of getting a new gig.

The only thing worse than having people talk about you is having them talk about not you. No, wait, I got it: The only thing worse than having people talk about you is Not Me.
Or something like that.
Am listening to the music of someone named Beth Orton. Like it, and don't know anything about her. Is anyone here a fan? The friend who lent it to me is, but she's a little scary. (The friend, not Beth, though she may be scary too.)

Here's the money question:
Do you hate your life anywhere near as much as Sebby hates his?

So he didn't bet against them... That's only one part of the issue. He put himself in a bad situation ripe for extortion.
Say his bookie is mob-connected (or the people he reports to are) and say the Reds aren't doing so hot and Pete's into them for, say a couple hundred grand and is having trouble paying...
What's to stop those guys from saying to Pete that he has two choices: 1) Do what you can to tank some games for the Reds (put in bad lineups, leave pitchers out too long or on short rest, etc., granted it's not foolproof but he can influence the outcome) or 2) We put you in the hospital or where no one will ever find you...
While he apparently never got in that situation, he shouldn't have allowed himself to be ANYWHERE CLOSE to that situation. That threatens the integrity of the game. That's the point.

As a player he was a danger to others on the field. His play was disgraceful. Exhibit 1 is Buddy Harrelson. I'll let others submit the other exhibits.
Who do you want your kids to look up to and emulate, a no good corrupt bully like Rose or a boozing womanizer like Ruth? No contest.
|
Exhibit 2: Ray Fosse. He ruined his career.
That said, on statistics alone, Rose belongs.

Oh, come on. He didn't bet on them every days. So there were some days he was, in essence, betting against them. And it also means that there were some days where he had more of an incentive to win than others, so he plays/pitches guys on the high-bet days, when they should rest, and then doesn't play them other days.
the only way to even plausibly make the argument is if he had committed at the outset to bet the same amount on the reds for every game, every day, and couldn't change. once he's picking and choosing his days, he's saying some games matter and others are throw-aways.
