I seem to derive less utility from guidebooks than most people as a general rule, but these were terrific, and contained lots of good advice about (e.g.) cheap, local restaurants and so on.

For visiting Hawai'i (I love the pretension of that apostrophe), picking an island is a big choice, because they're very different. Kauai and the Big Island are less developed than most of the others.
I will add (assuming that Mr. Man has not already), that Mr. Man and I have the Maui one and the Big Island one, if you'd rather just borrow ours. They may not be the most recent printing of the books though.

I'd tell you about cheap hotels, but we've never stayed in any cheap hotels in Hawaii. We're fancy.

Pshaw.

Sheraton Royal Hawaiian.

Sure, if you enjoy being surrounded by chain-smoking Japanese businessmen drinking Coors Light and surrounded by their weekend mekakes

Besides, the place is old and needs work.

Top spots on Oahu - by far - are the Halekulani and the Kahala Mandarin

We stayed at the Kahala Mandarin. Might stay at The W there too at some point (Starwood points!), but I'm disturbed by the lack of pool area (though we spent several evenings hanging out there).

We've also stayed at the Fairmont Orchid (Big Island) and the Ritz Kapalua (Maui). None of those qualify as budget though.

Perhaps you missed the part where she said NOT Expensive. $400/night at the Halekulani is their crap room with a view of the parking lot.

But I highly recommend the restaurant.

eta, The Sheraton Palace is not the only place where you'll see chain-smoking Japanese businessmen drinking Coors light with their weekend whatevers. Because the Hilton Hawaiian Village seemed to have the highest population of those guys.

I would have just asked you two, except I know you are fancy. Please refer to your luv-ah's post re: getting non-responsive responses to specific questions . . .

Yes. Begin exercising. Once you've jumped that hurdle, we'll talk about stop watches.

Note that Hank has not actually invited me to Casa Chinaski. Because he is lying scum.

Ouch! I'll have you know that I have been participating in two-a-days in preparation for next year's football season. Of course that's on Xbox, but it is still tiring.

Or, Casa Chinaski may be fully occupied with chain smoking, Coors Light drinking Japanese business men and their companions.

I'm sure he'll let you know as soon as there is a vacancy.

Why not? I had to go overseas unexpectedly and wanted to take my son with me (he didn't have a passport). As long as you show up with your airline ticket at the passport office (there has to be one in LA, no?), you can get it same-day.

Only two-a-day? I find that hard to believe.

I don't remember, but maybe $100. It wasn't outrageous.
