Bill Simmons on Houston:

Still, I can't shake something. When we landed in Houston on Saturday -- and you'll be getting the complete story of that flight in the next SuperBlog entry -- my buddy Sal asked an interesting question.

"Do you think anyone has ever spent nine straight days in Houston without actually living there?"

He was serious.

And I couldn't answer him.

Edited to add quote because it's Houston and it's the Super Bowl and I felt like it.
I'm sure what he meant was that the people of Houston are so friendly and welcoming that if you are there for more than a week, it feels like you've always lived there.

Having studiously avoided the XFL, I had to look this up. The article I found quotes Rod Smart saying, "It's like my birth name, except it only came later than birth." If I were him, I'd feel unworthy of having "Smart" on the back of my jersey, too.

Forget her voice - what is up with her hair? And the hair on the Shane character? I missed the first episode, but after this weekend, I think the show could use a little queer eye for the lesbian gal. (Though I did think the writing was generally good)

I have to say that Simmons has really gone downhill. I realize that he is churning out blog entries twice or thrice daily, but c'mon, can't you think of a more original schtick than "Houston sucks," or "I hate Clemens?" Gee, no one has ever ripped Houston before.

I realize that I'm probably being overly defensive, since I went to undergrad there, but it was like 55 degrees for a high in Houston today (chilly, for there), and Simmons acts as if hell hath frozen over. Shouldn't a straight-up Bahston guy handle such temps with aplomb? And maybe the dipshit should mention at least once that Houston hosted a prior Super Bowl, in 1974 at Rice Stadium. So it isn't as if this is completely uncharted territory.

Fuck, I went to the 1992 SB in Minneapolis... now that was cold, brother! But it was still fun.

FWIW, I have no clue who this Simmons guy is. I've heard the name "Clemens" before. Obviously (even to me) this whole dealio has to do with the Superbowl.

I hate being sick.

Professional Athletes Should Not Make Gay Porn

Clevelands Indians minor league pitcher Kazuhito Tadano is asking for forgiveness for what he called a one-time mistake -- his appearance in a gay porn video. No, really, I think it will enhance his career...

Amen, brother! The next 5 days according to the Star Tribune:

Low/High

Wed.: -5/0

Thu.: -3/5

Fri.: -11/-3

Sat.: -13/0

Sun.: -4/5

"Wednesday ...WINDCHILL ADVISORY...Mostly cloudy and very cold. Windchills of -20 to -30 are likely. Winds: northwest 15-30. High: near 0 Wednesday night ...Flurries, a little light snow late may ice up some roads. Low: -3"

Of course, you have to take the high/low with a grain of salt. The chart says a low today of -5, but the Strib lists the current temp at -6. I'm so glad I will be outside running around on ice from 7-8:00 both tonight and tomorrow night.

This is awfully sweet of you, Fringey, but I couldn't take this too seriously. Simmons went to Holy Cross. Am I really supposed to believe he can count all the way to 9?

eta: I hope you're feeling better.

What is "Holy Cross" (sounds like some kind of devil-worshipping place) and why can't any of you people get the quote stuff right on this?

Not tonight.

Tonight's episode with the early 90's hair band Extreme only runs a half hour.

Good stuff.
I have watched all of these, too. That was weird, because it was probably the most abrupt ending to a program without a cliffhanger that I have ever seen. I think part of the problem might have been that the show violated the "15-year-rule" I discusssed last week. They haven't been broken up long enough.

Of course the wife-stealing might destroy this rule altogether -- who knows?

When Worlds Collide Awkwardly

Unfortunate turns of phrase from the article:

"The commissioner of Japanese baseball came out and said, 'You will not draft Tadano."

Well, if he really did "come out", this shouldn't be an issue.

Outfielder Grady Sizemore said Tadano's speech last year was well received in the clubhouse.

"You could tell he was nervous," said Sizemore, a top prospect who lived with Tadano this winter. . . He's a great guy and a great pitcher."

Note to Grady -- You may want to rephrase this, as it makes you sound like a "catcher". NTTAWWT

You live in Minnesota, you deal with ice and snow. Ain't no complaining, and keep your work out routine up.

Is it hard to steer? How do you stop, or do you just crash into the snow banks?

You build banks of snow, and ride it down the hill like a really slippery luge. Then you hit a tree. If you've been drinking enough Snoshoe Grog, it doesn't even hurt.
