Agreed.
At summer tournaments there's the dunk contests. You eliminate players round by round. This summer a 14 year kid stayed in for a few rounds because the MC kept saying "C'mon he's 14!" Meanwhile he's doing straight dunks, and he's eliminating guys jumping OVER people. There's always been this subjective standard- little guys get some slack compared to taller guys. Considering no WNBA players has dunked live, if she even just straight dunked, its an accomplishment, but still.

The eminem cover would go better with ecstasy and poppers.

Don't get me wrong, I dig Atari Teenage Riot. The problem with them doing Manilow songs is that the songs would most likely be unrecognizable as Manilow tunes. The would be transformed into some Atari Teenage Riot songs with screamed Manilow lyrics. Maybe I am wrong - they might be able to pull it off. But, I think the essence of a good cover is to retain the enough of the original and then to build onto it with something new. Like when Tesla did a cover of "Signs."
Tool's cover of Nugent's "Stranglehold" comes to mind.

Nice call. Sonic Youth's "Superstar" from that album is one of the most languid and melancholy things this side of "Fake Plastic Trees." It's dead sexy. Of course, I'm the guy who thinks "Trinity Session" is a fuck tape. I guess everybody else busts a nut to, what, techno?

Also on that album is Matthew Sweet's cover of "Let Me Be the One." Which is nice.

Which just goes to show that neither dignity and good breeding, nor vulgarity, have anything to do with how big your wig is, how much eye shadow you wear or the number of rhinestones on your unitard.
I'm sure the fact that as the song's composer she made more money off Whitney's hit than Whitney did, made it much easier to be magnanimous. Not that I think Dolly isn't cool: she is only recently starting to be appreciated for the artist she really is (although she's always been appreciated as a pop star). Her new bluegrass stuff is incredible. She was born to sing bluegrass. But, if you like Dolly, you'll love Loretta Lynn.

Hate to agree with Hank, but I've got to. Shonen Knife rocks.

I also really liked Tori Amos's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". And Little Richard's "Rubber Ducky."

The Richard Thompson tribute album Beat the Retreat is really good.

Best conceptual record cover would be a punk/grunge cover of "Pleasant Valley Sunday." Best conceptual album cover would be REM doing Warren Zevon's Excitable Boy. I don't know why. I just think it would work.

On a related note, I quite liked the Hindu Love Gods (Zevon, Buck, Mills and Berry) cover of Prince's Raspberry Beret. Sloppy, but a fun take.

Very possibly. However, there is more to a recognizable song than the tune. Manilow's stuff has some pretty distinctive sing-song rhythms to it, which is a large part of what makes them so itchingly singable, and I would be dying to see what ATR's drums would do with that. High risk, but commensurately high reward if it works. Just having an imagined "Can't smile without you" cover in my head with all those thrashing drums will make me happy all evening.

Then again, I admit have a much higher tolerance than most for abstraction in my music.

Why is it everyone hates to agree with you?

That said, I also agree with you, though I hate it.

I would also add to the list the Ramones cover of Tom Waits' "I Don't Wanna Grow Up".

I also wouldn't mind seeing Dar Williams cover some Tom Waits stuff, particularly "Hold On".

ETA: Dammit Atticus, you reminded me. I also like the Cowboy Junkies' "cover" of Sweet Jane.

Okay, I'm done for now.

I have never agreed with anything you've said more. Once you've really listened to someone playing good drums, it changes the entire structure of how you hear the music.

And, good drummers, even if they are skinny little white guys, are incredible in bed. And never have small penises.

OK, I am noting that no one ever commented on my sock question. What is the deal with the socks? For the record, anyone around here who has sex with me, I have a preference for no socks. Socks off. Bare feet. In general, men have relatively unattractive feet (compared to women), but naked-but-for-socks is a really bad look.

I still am burning with curiosity as to why men are so frequently besocked during porn sex. Both gay and straight porn. It is a mystery to me.

Maybe cold feet? The literal, not the figurative, kind.
