Isn't plate appearances the qualifying metric? He could have only 200 ABs, but as long as he gets 502 plate appearances, including 302 walks, he'll have enough to do it.

Music question
Was having a discussion over drinks recently. The song "There is a light that never goes out" by The Smiths (aka the "Double Decker Bus" song) -- where should that song be ranked in the all time great song list? Does your answer necessarily depend on how you feel about Morrissey? Can you be a Morrissey hater and still acknowledge that it has a great melody and conveys a familiar message in a compelling way?

Why are you up this early? Especially with late hockey games last night.
Anyway, "there is a light" is a good song, but I'd have trouble saying it's even top 5 for the Smiths. Maybe it came out at some personally relevant time for you, so it's special. I don't see it as a more compelling song than any of "Heaven Knows" "William.." "you just haven't Earned it" "Shoplifters" or "girlfriend," at least.
The most timeless song is of course "Last Night I dreamt that somebody Loved Me." And that music was from so long ago that two months back I saw a band called "Pretty Girls make Graves." Having a band named after your songs is a pretty strong tribute (I think the Song was after a Keroauc story though).
Anyway, to segue to a good theme for Friday how about these lyrics:
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girl's mothers are bigger than
Other girl's mothers

Woodward reflects my disdain for Hank, Larry King and the current administation. Plus, I had Rio for a while. If you're good, maybe I'll find some a Christa Miller pic to put up. I don't think she's made an appearance as my avatar yet.

Steroid jokes aside, what's your view on the asterisk? Does Bonds get one for his homerun records? Should he get one? Will his production drop off after the league starts testing? I figure that he's so arrogant he won't retire if that happens, so he'll have to stop juicing. What then?

1. Barry Bonds' batting average this year will be over .400
2. He won't get enough official at-bats for him to qualify. This will lead to lots of punditry-type suggestions like that he should lead off, he should deliberately swing at bad pitches just to record more official ABs, etc. But he won't change a thing and will end up batting .409 with about 440 ABs and 200 BBs, 40-50 official ABs short of qualifying. He will, however, shatter the all-time single season OPS record, currently set by himself in 2001-03 or by Ruth in his mamoth 1920-21 seasons.
3. Someone will reply to this post making a steroid joke.
ETA: Bonds has the single season OPS record, for his 2002 season (1.381) followed closely by Ruth's 1920 season (1.379). For 2004, his batting average is .469 and his OPS is, get this, 1.804. Unreal.
|
His on-base % is over .700, which is insane. Unheard of. .600 is unheard of.
Edited to add that he's starting to convince me that he might even have been pretty good w/out the roids...(3!)

I see you watch Baseball Tonight too. Are you going to try to take credit for this "prediction" later on like the Contreras* prediction?
TM
* I realize one game does not a season make,** but Contreras had a sparkling outing against Oakland -- 6 innings, one earned run.
** But neither do the first three.
