Regardless, it was a shitty post. NCS as an on board persona is a decent sort and it denigrates her like she's less than if he perceives her on line self to be not hot....who is to say that is how she defines herself? I think not

I just now googled it and learned that Peter Krause (sigh) is starring. I will certainly watch it now. Like I need more TV. Good thing is, The Nine got cancelled and I still can't seem to get into Studio 60. So I guess, really, I don't have that much TV to watch after all.

So a GP calls me this week, and says, "Come to lunch with me on Friday. We've got a new client that I want you to meet -- she's in the fashion industry, and has some technology issues she needs help with too. You'll like her."

Friday comes, and we head out to lunch at a little Italian place in West LA. Client, as it happens, is in the back room of the fashion industry, manufacturing mannequins (or "forms," as I guess the kids call them these days).

I always thought of forms as primarily something for displaying clothes at the retail end, but I learned in between the salad and pasta that they're also a big deal during the manufacturing process, for quality control. When the Gap, say, chooses a piece and it's manufactured in Shanghai, Turkey and Bangladesh, they want to make sure that the manufactured pieces fit the precise form they've chosen. Client, among others, helps solve that problem by making forms that fit certain precise dimensions, and ship 'em around the world.

The interesting part is that sometimes the retailer doesn't want the form to be Generic American Woman or Generic Asian Woman, etc. They want Specific Supermodel. In that case, Client gets the NY model in question and has her step into a little booth where Client performs a 3-dimensional scan of her entire body. Client's software can then create a form that's accurate to the millimeter. They do this service for retailers, and occasionally for celebrities who want truly form-fitting clothing.

(Small segway here to Client's telling us stories of various people they've had scanned over the years, including Ahnold, who steps into the dressing room to strip down for the scan and stays there for a while, in order to -- in Client's estimation -- emerge from the dressing room more [Austrian accent] "impressive" [/Austrian accent].)

Other interesting thing is that Client has come up with a new process for the forms themselves. Most are silicone-based, but Client has come across something that's better in a variety of ways -- holds its shape better, more eco-friendly, feels more like real flesh, etc. Client explains this to us and looks around for a moment. The restaurant is not empty, but the lunch crowd hasn't yet fully arrived. "Here, look -- I brought a sample for you to see."

She reaches into her bag, pulls out and sets on our table a neck-to-waist version of a form from some Undisclosed NY Model. (The form, naturally, is in the altogether.)

"See how the skin looks? It's detailed almost to the level of the pores. Feel it."

Partner and I cut looks at each other, glance about the restaurant.

Client grins at us. "Come on. Feel them."
