Same with life expectancy. Whose fault is that? The men who shorten their lives by smoking or the men who shorten their lives by consuming excessive amounts of drugs/alcohol or by getting into disputes with other men who happen to own guns? Admittedly, the disparity due to smoking/drugs/alcohol is narrowing, but so is the disparity in life spans.
Combat deaths I will give you. But remember that NOW and other feminist organizations have long advocated for women in the military and on the front lines. It was Newt Gingrich who said we cannot be in the trenches because we get "infections."

I find it a useful mental exercise when reading the posts of this sock to pretend that the words the sock has written are lyrics to a Melt Banana song, and then to sing the post accordingly. It helps with readability, if not comprehension.

Click on the offending odious poster's profile and click "ignore."
The downside, you cannot ignore me.

Although I appreciate and am thankful for the flame war that resulted after Rb's shopping poo-poo (in an abstract way, given that I did not actually have the opportunity to read it), I have to say that bitchily complaining about holiday shopping crowds is vaguely reminiscent of a piece by the kind of senile cranky old guy who used to be at the end of 60 Minutes. "Did you ever notice that the more rushed you are, the more likely it is that the checkout line you are in is going to experience a cash register breakdown? And what's up with kids today who need $200 sneakers. When I was a kid . . . ."

what troubled me about rb's post, as much as I read of it and I didnt read all so I could be wrong, was that she was bitching about a problem she was a part of. her very presence contributed to the business of the suburban mall. pure hypocrisy.

You are correct. Because I am a moderator. But, sometime a while back, I posted a side-splittingly hilarious post about how to ignore people's posts without actually using the ignore button. I recommend you try to find it as it is both informative and, as mentioned above, side-splittingly hilarious.

It's the only thing you can bitch about around Hanukah/ Christmas. What else are we going to whine over? Getting lots of great presents? Going to parties, hanging with our friends, nibbling great hors d'ouevres, getting soused on the really good stuff? Santa Claus?
Give the curmudgeons a break. It's all we've got this time of year. And don't take anyone too seriously who's complaining with a heavily spiked eggnog in his/her hand.

You are so jealous of me, it's insane (which seems par for the course.)
And, I don't recall mentioning "suburbia" at all, but of course, you didn't read my post, but you insist on going on and on and on about it... (again, the green slimy monster emerging from your twat.) Last I checked, DC/NY/LA/SF/younameit, all have escalators, cars, tree lots, parking garages and fat people.
And I thought the only thing that troubled you was your dealer telling you he was dry... or are you in another program now? And how is it that you aren't married. -------------

Different subject, but just out of curiosity, do you see these differences as good and desirable things, or do you think that society would be better off with one shared culture, formed in a merger of the several different constituents (and, of course, hopefully including portions of each, such that no one constituent part is just subsumed)?
I ask this because it occurs to me that things seem to work ok when people combine, but never do when they insist on maintaining divisions.

It would be nice to put you in a position where you would understand, but I bet (from your failure to apply any lesson you would have picked up from it) you've never put yourself in such a position.
Do me a favor, go hang out a Wu Tang concert or a black church fundraiser or an NAACP meeting or on the block in the projects. Then come back to me and tell me all about how easily you fit in. Of course you don't sit around talking about being white. But my sitting in a boardroom at a closing filled with white people should be as uncomfortable for me as doing one of those things would be for you. You may not be intimidated (although I doubt that), but you will notice the differences between you and everyone else in the room and you will do your best to let everyone know that you share certain things with them that would allow them to accept you. I do that shit all the time, so I'm better at it than you. The difference is, I have to do it at work (among other places). You do not. You would have to go out of your way to put yourself in a similar situation.

Believe it or not, yes. A lot of the times, you discuss how to deal with racial problems. How to get along with someone who has said something that is objectively offensive and how to not let it impact your work and what to do to diffuse a potentially harmful situation.
My first summer, I had an inhouse job at a large company. Back then I used to shave my head in the summer (easier maintenance and it gets hot). I shaved my head like the second week and my (unofficial) mentor sat me down and told me that the look wouldn't be considered professional, that in this atmosphere, I should have come to talk to him about it first, etc. Sure enough, the next few days, I got comments from no less than 3 (white) superiors on it. Things like, "Is that a street look?" That's one example. I can give you many, many others, but I doubt it would do any good.

Excellent fantasy. I have the same one.

Attracting and hiring candidates might be tough, but retention isn't. And my beef, then, is that I don't get all this great mentoring. I don't have anyone ask these questions I want to ask. Sure, I seek people out, and get the answers, but I've got no real desire to stay if a a better position comes along. And I'm offended that I'm not valued in that regard SOLELY because of my race.
|
If you choose to leave the firm because you didn't get a mentor and some black guy did and you think that means the firm is somehow more invested in the future of the black associates than they are in yours, I bet they don't want you there anyway -- and it probably has more to do with your tenuous hold on reality than your work product. I say, good riddance.

|
Wrong. I would never kick your ass because you would never say the things you say on this board to my face. Mostly because I suspect you're a coward. "Plotting jumping you?" Ha. That's rich. Do you think I'd ask my black friends to case the joint we were meeting in, have them hide in the wings and just at the right moment leap out to get you?
I'm sorry you took it as a threat. What I wanted to convey was the fact that unlike on other occassions when things have gotten heated (with other people), you made it so personal that it went past debate and angered me on another level. But I don't really give a shit and it doesn't matter because we'll never meet. So sleep tight.

I'm assuming a fairly low standard for "working ok" - but the great country of Canada has worked ok since 1867 and our whole existence is predicated on maintaining our divisions.
