Whitney's version is not an "over-the-top, look at my range, xtina" version. It is simple and powerful. She does not go up and down, switching octaves, trilling, warbling, quavering or going through runs to show off just to show off (like so much R&B crap you hear today). In fact, the major criticism she got throughout her career and especially with this song in the black community was that she didn't showcase her voice in that way (until she recently caved to that criticism and sold out the opposite way).
And there is huge feeling in the song. Just because she is crisp, clear and powerful doesn't mean there is no emotion. The difference in style does not amount to a lack of feeling on her part.
Dolly's version was good. Whitney's version was unbelievable. The only reason why most people can't stand it is because it was played 10 million times (that and the fact that it is Whitney). She's right. She owns that song. No one, including me, wants to hear her talk like that. But it was like it was written for her. And her superior talent is showcased perfectly through it.
Please note that the bitch is still a coked out nut job.

Well, like Not Bob said, To-MAE-toe To-MAH-toe.
It's not and never will be her song. I just deleted an entire paragraph on "feeling" b/c I realize that this argument is so ridiculously subjective that it's worthless. You like Whitney's version. I like Dolly's. Neither of us really care about the other person's argument b/c they're not going to retroactively change our preferences.

You know, I used to like Dolly's version more, but this has changed my perspective.
You're right, Whitney's is incredible. It's her song.

I think another reason you might be forgetting is that the song is pure pop-schlock. Just horrible fucking crap. I cannot believe we are debating the merits of this cheesy fucking song. I don't think I have ever heard Dolly's version, but I cannot imagine I would like it any better, unless the lyrics and melody are different in her version.
Wait a second . . . what am I saying? I condemn this song simply because it does not appeal to my personal tastes? That doesn't seem right. There is all sorts of good music out there that I personally do not like, but that does not mean it is not good music. I think it is time I stepped outside my little personal worldview musical fascism.
I'm really glad I had this little hump day epiphany.

Fuck you. the imaginary Hank persona is 6' 11" and can still dunk. He is at an age where he would need tons of slack in any dunk contest against 18-25 year olds though. "Sure Joe soared up, did a 360 above his friend switched hands then dunked, and Hank just barely got high enough, but Hank's was vintage."

Of course it's subjective. That's what makes it fun to argue about. Especially because when I point to something objective, like the 12 million Bodyguard albums she sold on the strength of this song, it will only cause you to say something like "12 million people are always wrong." And to be honest, most really successful pop stuff is crap. The only difference here would be that the song itself isn't really "pop" as most people would think of it. It's pop only because it sold so much.
I'd like to hear Aretha sing it, though.

PS - Does anyone really believe that Sebby only watched gay porn just once?

I don't like seeing hard cocks in straight porn. In fact, I don't like the sex act in the porn. I prefer just looking at the women nude, or doing something to each other or themselves. I don't need to see some cat ramming it home.
But yes, if I'm watching porn out of boredom or for a laugh, you have to have all sorts of penetration. Animals, midgets, the elderly, whatever... but that's for comedy value.
The money shot is of course fun to watch, but its not erotic. We men view it more as critics than anything else. I'll think to myself "Good distance, nice volume... I give him an 8.8."

No, but that may be because even I've watched it twice (that I remember).
It didn't exactly get me hot, but it was pretty amusing, and titilating in a weird sort of way.

Silly little flower.
Anyway, I stand behind my initial assertion that it gave me chills when I first heard it.
Another song that I was thinking about yesterday that I love on the basis that it gives me chills is KD Lang's version of Crying (w/ Roy Orbison). Spectacular voice (and not such a schlocky song this time).

No, you condemn everything that is somewhat popular, which controls your personal music tastes. Basically, your desire to not be controlled by popular culture has, in effect, caused you to be more controlled by it than most. Every decision you make is based upon every decision that pop culture makes. You choose the opposite not based on personal preference, but b/c it's the opposite. Technically, you have no free will. You want to like that new Guster song, but pop culture now likes Guster, so you cannot. You are pop culture's Newtonian Third Law of Motion. And you bow to its will. Or un-will.
