Agreed. it's kind of annoying. I'm not sure whether it's just me getting old, but the whole day can be kind of a pain in the ass. I had a pint of GuiNNess last night in advance, and that is it for me for today. Besides, I'm going to have a busy day at work today.

Lots of kilts (which is brave at 20 degrees, I think.) Kilts were just as much an Irish tradition as a Scot one.

I'm not cranky today because of St Pat's Day. I'm cranky because my commute, while relatively short, is highly frustrating, and is made that much worse by the crap that passes for morning radio. Who decided that people on their way to work want to hear four obnoxious, loud, buffoonish assholes, both those who are employed by the radio "network" and those who have an inexplicable desire to call in to said network for their 10 seconds of non-fame, make bad, scatological, obvious, unfunny jokes at intolerable decibel levels for endless intervals between horrendously overplayed songs?

But by golly, I was cheered up by the following bumper sticker on the back of the red Audi that was in front of me for nearly my entire trip, and whose driver was incapable of pulling forward enough to give other cars room to get through the intersection before the light changed:

"I (Heart) Dandie Dinmont Terriers"

That is so sweet, I just wanted to give the car a little love tap, so that it would lurch forward, sending the box of tissues and piles of stuffed animals on the ledge beneath the back window flying into the back of the driver's head.

Bagpipes were originally Irish, but crossed the sea to Scotland relatively early, maybe as early as the early middle ages. But there has almost always been some place in Irish music for bagpipes and their like.

It seems like Kilts, however, were a Scottish invention, and probably weren't adopted in Ireland until the clearing of the Scottish highlands sent many Scots to Ireland. Even then, they are much more often a Scotch-Irish than a true Irish form of apparel. The Irish kilts that were finally adopted for military use were almost always saffron colored rather than tartans, but then, even the Scots were not big tartan fans until the 19th century.

OK, I'm sobering up here.
