I've had this happen to me too. The Flight Attendants will tell the gate agent "Hey, we've got room for one more here" and then tell me I'll need to hold the Brazenette on my lap. I just pull her boarding pass out and tell them to move along.
I want my kid strapped down if we're hitting any turbulence, not bouncing around the cabin like a beach ball.

How much are cigarettes in NYC now? Someone told me he paid over $7 here* for a pack. That's outrageous, and I don't even smoke.
It has always seemed to me that the bigger the city, the cheaper the cab ride. Anyone?

My city is bigger than the state of Rhode Island, and I'd say no.
I'd amend the statement to "the more alternative means of public transportation the cheaper the cab ride."

You would expect a flight attendant to hassle any of the other 167 people on a fully-booked flight, because people are no damn good and sometimes they lie. Why take it personally that she didn't take your word for it? You know full well that the other 167 people on the flight would lie, and she's had all of 12 seconds to distinguish you from the 167 sociopaths.

I was in line behind some dude in a deli who was buying cigarettes, and when I heard his grand total (almost $8), I was astonished enough to actually comment. I said "EIGHT BUCKS? You've gotta be kidding!" (and no one would mistake me for a fan of cigarettes). That's one espensive habit, man.

I am so aghast at your taking someone's side other than my own, that I am scarcely able to comment on the irresponsibly placed hyphen in your screed.

Make a parent carry the kid in his/her lap the entire flight, usually (if the safety regs are followed) strapped to the parent's body with a separate kiddie seat belt. That's what "babe in arms" means, after all - in arms.
I'm surprised the FA would get all bitchy at someone stating the obvious (that they didn't believe the parent had paid for the seat and wanted proof). I'd just have said "unfortunately, not everyone is honest and I need to see the boarding pass" and then appologize for the inconvenience and thank them for their cooperation.
I have, actually, seen parents who didn't pay for a seat for a kid try to put the kid - car seat and all - into an adjacent seat on a full flight, and then bitch uproariously that the FAs were violating "policy" by not letting their freebie kid sit in its own seat.
Those car seats don't fit into all airline seats, either, I've learned. In one case I recently saw, the car seat only fit in the aisle seat for some reason, trapping the parents in the inside of the row with no means of eggress. When they asked how they were to get in and out of the row, the FA said "well, you can either climb over or under the car seat or check it, but I recommend that you use the lavatories before we strap it in." I was surprised that the car seat was permitted at all in that case, but maybe they figured that, since it was up to the parents and they were the ones trapped there was an assumption of risk.

We were told that the baby seat could not go on the aisle for takeoff or landing. We could rearrange during flight, that was fine, but we had to re-rearrange so that the baby seat was in the middle for landing. (American)

It's my understanding (from actually reading the FAA regs on car seats) that car seats must be in the window seat or middle seat, but may not be in an aisle seat.

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

The FA could also have said "sorry, but I think we have someone else with a boarding pass for the same seat and I just need to sort this out." Even if she was lying, it's better than accusing a passenger of lying.
Car seats should fit in any airplane seat if they are approved for airline use. If they are approved, they should have a sticker that says that. We learned this the hard way, when flying Lufthansa, which actually checks (those oh-so-thorough Germans). Our seat had a sticker saying it was approved for use on all commercial airplanes but we didn't know that, and couldn't find it in the three second Siglinde gave us to look.
And airlines are getting stricter about making you put the car seat in the window seat so it doesn't block your access to the aisle in an emergency. They're also getting stricter about carryons in my experience -- I've seen lots of people stopped in the past few months.

Haven't read the regs, and don't plan to, but according to the FAs even the middle seat is no good, because it could get in the way of the person in the window seat if s/he has to rush out to the aisle.

I believe you - that makes a hell of a lot more sense to me. But I don't think half of these people have a clue what they are doing, honestly.
Just try getting them to serve you your own wine in flight (expressly permitted, so long as an airline employee opens the bottle).
