Most other things I think are must-haves have been included here, but here are a few more:
1. Glengary Glen Ross
2. Homicide (the TV series, now on DVD through about the fifth season of so)
3. Oz (the tv series, now on DVD through about the fifth season or so)
4. Reservoir Dogs
5. Top Gun (a guilty pleasure for a Tom Cruise hater like me)

Late to the Party
Late to the Party, but it looks like my list will be a bit different anyway. I'm more of a classics/noir fan, and many of the movies on other peoples lists (like the Princess Bride) I feel no need to own because it's on my however-many-hundred-channels of television so often.
My list:
(1) Night of the Hunter; a classic and a great one to pop in when you can't sleep at night.
(2) Naked Kiss; to hell with horror movies - this one should will give you nightmares for months yet also make you chuckle to yourself.
(3) Werner Herzog's Nosferatu - Isabelle Adjani and Klaus Kinski; again, everything you want at 2 am.
(4) Hotel New Hampshire - a little bio about my family, with a 20 something Jodie Foster to boot. Ah, Jodie!
(5) Smooth Talk. Laura Derns is great, and Treat Williams is incredible.
(6) (Because just five isn't possible) Rebel Without a Cause. Seminal and Defining.
(7) (Because you can't forget Brando) Apocolypse Now. The Horror! The Horror!
(BTW, not sure all of these are out now on DVD - some may still only be available in Video, and I think my Naked Kiss is actually a bootleg.)

Oh, my. Can I come over and watch movies with you! (Note that I didn't see your list until after I posted).

Top 7 roles filled by unknowns, with 6 now famous. EVERY line rings true, and most clever:
Kevin Bacon and Mickey Rourke meet the rich girl who says some smart ask crap and rides away-
Bacon: Ever get the sense there's stuff going on you just don't know about?
Your list of great scenes is good, but if you watched it again you'd double it.

MBB wasn't his best movie, but it is a top 10 for a movie I can watch over and over. Do the Right Thing is a "better" movie, but not a good "stick a DVD in and have a movie night" thing.

My DVD collection pretty much consists of the following: the complete box set of the Avengers tv series, various Audrey Hepburn movies, Trading Places, Top Secret!, To Die For, and the complete Inspector Morse collection. It's ok but rather sad. My husband (from whom I'm separating (amicably)) has the larger collection (and is justifiably hanging on to it)) and so I'm going be buying in the near future. I'm just curious to see what other people regard as essentials. thanks.
Oh - I'm going to get Office Space.

Almost all our DVDs are kid flicks. I don't think you really wantr much of what's on my list. Although Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. are both way cool.

If you are into car chases, then I would recommend To Live and Die in LA, which, despite having to overcome a Wang Chung title song, is still a pretty cool movie. It is most notable, however, for haivng the first-ever car chase going the wrong way down the LA freeway at rush hour. Great scene.

I almost put Finding Nemo on my list too, but knew it would probably not be a hit with most of this crowd. It is really a sweet movie.
(My youngest boy calls it "Memo" -- awwwww.)

If you can kick yourself in the head, that dude who fell asleep while involved in a threesome with you really IS a loser.

YES! If only for the volleyball scene featuring "Goose" and his wonderful abs.
Other fabulous ab movies include Rockstar and anything Rocky.

Top Gun timmy time--aren't you really swooning over Slider's abs? Kilmer's partner, not the dead E.R. doc.

Others not mentioned:
Singin' in the Rain: Worth owning just for the title scene.
The Wizard of Oz: Brings me back to childhood.
Pride & Prejudice (BBC version with Colin Firth): Colin Firth. Yum.
O Brother Where Art Thou?: Raising Arizona is my favorite Coen Bros. movie but this moved Fargo into 3rd place
Also in the family friendly category (I have to have movies my brother the minister will let his kids watch):
The Man From Snowy River
Fantasia
Hook
My 5 would probably be:
LOTR:FOTR
Pride & Prejudice
Singin' in the Rain
Wizard of Oz
Raising Arizona

Five DVDs, trying not to repeat the obvious ones:
The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
Better Off Dead
Gross Point Blank
La Femme Nikita
The Pink Panther
Bonus TV series:
The Muppet Show
Car Chases:
The chase scene in the Bourne Identity is very similar to Ronin in style and setting. Bullitt and Ronin are definitely tops. The Italian Job(s) are good too, and it's very interesting to watch them back to back (start with the new one, or I think you'll be disappointed it's not as quirky as the original).
But the movie that has the car chase the most above the rest of the movie in quality is The Peacemaker (George Clooney, Nicole Kidman). Bad, bad movie. Great car chase with Clooney beating the crap out of a giant Mercedes.

Really? I thought it was good; in fact, quite good (not a DVD purchase, but I always watch it if I scroll past on the TEEvee.)
