For those of you who don't have the good fortune to live in TCOTU and get accosted on public transportation on a regular basis, unsolicited initiation of conversation is way past over-the-shoulder-reading, prolonged staring and pole-hogging on the "where's-my-mace" scale of subway offenses.

I said the only thing I could say - "maybe not in England." A little crazy, I know, but I was ready for anything and not concerned about the consequences. Luckily this appeared to satisfy his curiosity. Moral of the story? Martin Amis has jumped the shark big time. I guess that was the point after all.
