Wait, me or the real Coltrane?

So, poll. Name a song or three that is so distinctive, memorable and gratifying that is should not be remade.

I'll go with:

1. Natural Woman - Aretha
2. What's goin' on - Marvin
3. I'll Be There - Jackson Five

I feel this way more about hip hop than I do about pop, rock or soul. (What's up with AI having a soul week, followed two weeks later by a Motown week?). Could you imagine anyone other than NWA doing "Today was a good day?" Or Snoop/Nate/Warren G/Kurupt doing "It ain't no fun if the homies can't have none?"

"It ain't no fun if the homies can't have none" is an incredible song. It's got to have the highest 'radio play/words needed to be bleeped out' ratio ever. Despite the fact that half the words are missing, it's still played an incredible amount. Now that's the mark of a great tune. They played it on the PA between sets at Anger Management, and having 40,000 people singing along with every single word . . . that's something I'll never forget.

Yeah. What the hell is that all about? Are managers telling their people it's all about the money. It's all about your money and me? Get out there and sell something? I was flipping thought the music video channels last night and I see Dylan. I thought hmm, Dylan has a new video. But it looks like a bra commercial. Turns out it IS a bra commercial. I freaked out. Dylan of all people - selling out to Vicki's Secret?

The beginning of the end.

I don't think I go to too many bars or clubs that play Top 40 type music. Usually, if I am going out, it is to see a band. Even if just to a bar, it seems like tons of bars have a DJ spinning house music or some variation. It is not that heard to not be exposed to pop music. Like, everyone makes references to that milkshake song, but as far as I know, I have never heard it or anything else by whoever sings it.
You know, I think you might like Kelis. Not so much the milkshake song, but her first hit, "I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW." It's kinda PLF-esque.

I think you will agree with me, str8, that part of what made CFNY great is that they didn't bleep anything. Those were the days.

One thing I have learned from hanging out with musicians is just how differently people hear music. Last night, there were a couple of performances I really liked that the SO absolutely hated.

Having the Funk Brothers perform as the band covered up a multitude of vocal sins (Jasmine).

I thought Fantasia was really good, the OM hated her.

I listened to only parts of John Stevens because thirty seconds of his singing last night made me want to kill myself. How could someone so young be so soul deadening?

JPL cannot sing, at all, but he's going to stay in for a while.

I cannot stand to watch Amy Adams and Jennifer Hudson perform. Their facial expressions irritate me so completely, I have to turn away from the television.

I adore LaToya Londfon.

It's hard to imagine who will capture the hearts of America the way Clay did. JPL seems an obvious choice, but the whole inability to sing thing hurts him. Perhaps America will unite behind the soulless sugary Diana DeGarmo.

Last thought about AI: it's so much better (1) on the dvr (2) after a drink or two.

e/o
Hawaiian girl number one blew. She is gonzo.
JPL- unbearably dreadful. watching him try to restrain his awful dance moves is like watching a mink in a cage waiting to become part of PJs wardrobe. Deserves to be gone but wont be in bottom three

Latoya. Your charisma and personality called. They said to meet you at your next wedding gig in about five weeks.

John Stevens. Bummer. But I called in about 25 times to help make sure one little setback wont knock him out.

Amy Adams. Tied for bottom three with

Jennifer Hudson and her crack baby vibrato. I cant decide which of these two will join Camille and

Diana. That was a cringeworthy performance. Amateur hour.

Fantasia was fabulous

George Huff has captured the heart of america with the bouncing and the smiling and the singing.

Jasmine. SUcked in part. Helped by backup vocals. A strong case for them to lose that shit. Notice not eveyone gets them. Unrelated note. Her dad Rudy is the first Asian man I have ever ffound attractive. Hot.

The Least Enjoyable Part of Moving

Though there are many, the current number one on my list is:

1. dealing with fucking monopolistic utilities when trying to disconnect service

Of the three I've dealt with this morning, the Comcast bitch tested my patience the most. Mainly due to cable box return issues. TXU comes in an annoying second (they charge an $8 fee to disconnect service!) and SW Bell was the least irritating. That says a lot considering that I was hung up on by SBC's automated service the first time I called in.

Say what you will, at least the final three last year could all sing. I'm scared to death we are going to have a final 3 this year that includes JPL and John Stevens and it will be partly my fault b/c I voted for JPL in the wildcard round b/c he made me laugh. Now my ears bleed every time he sings, but it's too late, I can't take back the votes.

Bottom three prediction: Camile (please god), Jennifer Hudson and Amy Adams. I'm hoping there will be a surprise and JPL or John will be in there, but I doubt it.
please. John Stevens has about as much angst as PJ at the Barney's Warehouse Sale. I think you are confusing him with Edward Norton. And you know he will be okay bc I told you that I was calling in a zillion times to make sure he stayed and I told you his line was quite busy throughout, though you may not have gotten that message.

Me too. Other than Rainy Day Woman (hey who in HS doesn't like a song that says "must get stoned"?), I never understood what all the hype was about.

I am thinking we would. Uninstersting, yes, but loudmouthed, arrogant, full of themselves, and deluded is strong reality tv. And who didnt enjoy watching the Mooties in law school? Well I didnt but I bet all the reality buffs here would watch.

but I dont know what major law firm would make a not even first year a partner. Maybe that securities litigation outfit out of San Diego? They seem like they love publicity and they are known in their field.

And just like that, a helpful GA friend e-mails the tune. Not bad. I need to listen a bit more, but I like the chorus.

This caused me to go without cable for a year and a half after the last time I moved. Ask them to install cable, and they'll send somebody right out. Cancel because you're moving to another state, and you have to bring to box to the cable box return center, located thirty miles away and open from 2:00 to 2:12 alternate Thursdays, unless your box is a ZF-847 ("How do I know if it's a ZF-847?", "The installer should have told you when he put it in. They look the same as the other boxes."), then you have to take it to the alternative cable box return center, located in the opposite direction 15 miles, open from 10:30 to 10:40 every third Wednesday.

Bastards.

That wasn't NWA. That was Ice Cube long after he left NWA.

I agree with you. But it is so rarely done in rap that it doesn't even make sense to discuss. Artists may borrow from each other all the time. But the only remakes I can really think of are the Method Man, Redman and Erick Sermon version of Rapper's Delight and Snoop's version of A Children's Story and La di da di. These were more like tributes than remakes, but the only decent one of the bunch was the Rapper's Delight remake.
