OK, Does this remind anyone of David's little "speech" from the first episode of the second season of The Office? (Not going into further detail because I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it.)

jumping in without playing catchup, I have to say that I imagine it is a lot more like "oh, you're working for Client X right now. He has some ... issues. If you approach him in this manner he seems to get over himself faster." I know when I have little mentoring (with a small m, the informal personal relationship kind of mentoring that is the only real mentoring and that can't be assigned through some bullshit firm program of mentor-providing) talks with other associates that's the kind of shit I say. "Yeah, Joe's a bit odd, he's a screamer but he won't scream at women. Don't think you're lucky - it means he has trouble giving feedback or instructions, so be extra careful 'cause every mistake is just building up inside him with no outlet." At the formal "Women's Mentoring" events the firm has, we sit around and talk about suit colors and handbags. As I said before, fucking useless (not least because I do NOT need to be getting style tips from 45 year old lawyers).

Attracting and hiring candidates might be tough, but retention isn't.
Actually, retention is exactly what has proved tough with both women and minorities in BIGLAW. (It's a big problem for all associates, increasingly, as more and more of us lookat the partners in our firms and say "oh, no fucking way, I am so out of here", but especially for women/minority GAs, who look at what the prior generation that had to do nasty shit to make it, which made them often pretty unpleasant people, and therefore not real exemplars of the "come be like us!!" message you need to give GAs to encourage retention.)

And my beef, then, is that I don't get all this great mentoring. I don't have anyone ask these questions I want to ask. Sure, I seek people out, and get the answers, but I've got no real desire to stay if a a better position comes along. And I'm offended that I'm not valued in that regard SOLELY because of my race.
Why, because the mentoring relationships you seek out and foster yourself are somehow "inferior" to those randomly assigned to you by management? Strange. I understand feeling looked over and left behind while the firm makes allsorts of visible efforts to "reach out" to everyone but you, and I agree that it's a problem with how firms try to address the problem, probably resulting from firms wanting to make some formalistic policy change (form a committee!) and make entrenched cultural problems vanish like magic. But, damn, don't blame bad mentoring for that. Mentoring is a two way relationship between you and someone you work with. Nothing more, nothing less. The "Mentoring" programs to bring non-traditional laywer people into the fold are truly, truly bullshit and not worth fretting over.

Speaking of Porn...

Has anyone covered this yet?

http://biz.yahoo.com/rc/031202/media_playboy_1.html

Playboy announces the creation of SpiceHD, the first HDTV pay-per-porn channel...

Personally, as an HD viewer and self-styled porn afficionado, I'm not sure how I feel about this. Crappy production values are what give some of the stuff it's allure. Also, there comes a point when you are seeing what you're watching a little bit too clearly, if you know what I mean...

I would think the physical imperfections of the stars would be that much more pronounced in HD, particularly the aging ones.

And I don't even want to see Ron 'the Hedgehog' Jeremy in HD.

Also speaking of porn, someone's trying to muscle in on my plan to have sex-shops all across america. I'm not too worried though, since my business plan does not envision taking over any Stuckey's truck stops. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...today/12056476

What I was railing against yesterday, and what really irks me is the attitude that people have against SAHMs or women who don't work for whatever reason. It just pisses me off how judgmental people are about others' life choices and how quickly women who don't work outside the home are labeled "hangers on" or "hos" or what have you.

When a wife doesn't work outside the home, whether there are children or not, it most probably is the result of a joint decision between the spouses.
This is pretty different from some of your comments yesterday. To respond to what you are saying here, though, certainly that is my experience. When we were only planning on kids, my wife said that she would work after we had one. It was important to figure this out in advance, because we were about to buy a new home and her income was essential to maintain it.

After the kid was born, it was clear that she wanted to stay at home. Partly to be with our son, partly because she was sick of her job. But, this was after the Great Raise of Aught-Aught, and I was busy as hell (on an hours-based bonus system) and pretty confident that if I kept working hard I could make partner. So, I agreed she could stay at home if that made her happy.

I thought that I did this out of love, respect for her desires, and the knowledge that growing up with her would be a wonderful thing for our son.

Yesterday, you claimed that men -- presumably all men, since you chose not to qualify it -- like their wives to stay at home because that's a "trophy" or status symbol. I don't remember the exact words you used and don't care to read that post again. But I don't remember reading anything on these boards that I ever found so personally insulting and offensive.

From the article:

"It was a sneaky deal," Karen McMillan, the county official in charge of zoning, says. "They came in in the middle of the night. We thought it was a boot outlet."

Boot outlet? Missed it by one letter...

Why is it personally insulting if it doesn't apply to you? You cannot be serious [this is grammatically incorrect obviously, but I wanted to use the J.McEnroe catch-phrase] that unless someone says "well, in most cases... blah blah blah" she actually means that it applies 100% of the time. This isn't a legal brief, it's a discussion. To think that unless I put a qualifier in, it must mean I think that about every man is wilfully to misunderstand. If you want to do that, go right ahead, but I think it's ridiculous.

Is there anything you can say about "men" or "women" or "children" or [just about anything] that is going to apply 100% of the time? (Maybe biological things, like "all mammals give birth to live young" or something.)

You're not going to try to tell me that there aren't men who say, "No wife of mine is going to work..." as if it is some sort of slight to their manhood, are you?

Edited to correct unintentional and unsightly grammatical error.

Also, a word of caution to travelers...

Next time you pull off the interstate at a familiar rest stop and ask the clerk for the "Pecan Log Roll", you may not get what you bargained for...

Check the sign out front.

I will try, because it's pretty freakin' funny -- but I doubt it, as it's a new season and all. The hilarity factor, however, is in large part owing to the expressions on the actors' faces and knowing the personality of the characters.

It's a great show -- the first season is available on DVD, and the second season is airing now (not this second, necessarily, I mean in this general time frame -- that's for you Sidd) on BBC America.

Hey, I just googled sites about the show. David's a buffoon. Guess I should've expected it...

But I will TiVo it - it does look funny.
