Bring back Humble & Fred.
Hey GWNC, I saw Barenaked Ladies perform last week. They did a very ponderous song about suicide (there was a lyric about a luke-warm bath that squicked my wife to no end), and in the intro, Ed Robertson talked about how there's a bridge in Toronto that was the second-most frequent site for suicides in North America, after the Golden Gate bridge, so they enclosed it. I'd have to think it's somewhere on Bloor/Danforth, no? Any ideas?

I agree with you. But it is so rarely done in rap that it doesn't even make sense to discuss. Artists may borrow from each other all the time. But the only remakes I can really think of are the Method Man, Redman and Erick Sermon version of Rapper's Delight and Snoop's version of A Children's Story and La di da di. These were more like tributes than remakes, but the only decent one of the bunch was the Rapper's Delight remake.

You're right, my bad. But I learned about Slick Rick only because of Snoop's La di da di, and his references to Slick Rick. Caused me to buy a few Slick Rick albums, and very glad I did. So something good came out of that cover. That's another amazing song.

Yes. It's the viaduct on bloor-danforth. I used to live beside it. All kinds of people would kill themselves off it - one of the more famous being the guy who broke the sex scandal at Maple Leaf Gardens.
(and there is some Toronto lore for the rest of you)

His version of "Paid in Full" in Old School was pretty hot.

Badass song. Very sexy, but not sleazy. Then again, much of Withers' catalog is like that.

AI
I was wondering if and when they were going to bring in the celebrity judges. I just wish they had brought in some who could be as honest as Randy and Simon.
That said, Randy was really bugging me last night. Maybe things sounded really different live, but I just wasn't getting a lot of his comments.
Camile Velasco sounded better than she's done in a while, but her hand motions were beyond annoying. Was she trying to make it look like she was enjoying herself more? For the most part, I didn't hear the pitch problems Randy was referring to.
Jon Peter Lewis I thought really improved on his pitch problems of the previous week (in which he sucked). I also thought he struck a good balance between singing and dancing. He still needs to have a bit more fun up there, though.
Latoya London sounded pretty good, but her dress made her look like a pear, and I didn't particularly like the extensions (though I loved her comment about "but it's a pretty cat" which cracked up the judges).
Amy Adams was just okay. It seemed that after last week and the judges' reaction, there's a country twang creeping in. And Simon's right--she does look like Jay Leno, though probably daughter, not sister, and not in a bad way. Wouldn't it be hysterical if we found out she was the product of her mother's brief fling with a hard-working standup comic?
John Stevens was unbearably awful. Not a single part of the song was in tune. Also, the way they are having him grow his hair out just makes him look unkempt.
Jennifer Hudson had solid, if a little over the top, vocals. I couldn't help comparing her performance to K. Locke's almost-got-her-booted rendition last year of the same song. By comparison, Jennifer kicked butt.
Jasmine Trias sang about the best I think I've heard her, though she still sounded strained, particularly on her high notes. I don't think she has very good vocal production technique.
Diana Degarmo is a total nightmare. She shouts, and they tell her she's good. She also had the worst outfit of the night.
Fantasia Barrino: all my notes say is "bad sweater, good singing." While her connect-with-each-band-member thing might have worked live, on TV it just looked like she was turning her back to the camera a lot. No connection with the audience, especially when contrasted with . . .
George Huff. Damn I love this kid. This was another good theme for him, though even last week I had to agree with Paula when she said he has the sexiest voice ever. I think training and experience in gospel AND opera is about the best possible combination.
My bottom three is John Stevens, Diana Degarmo and Camile Velasco. Poor John is starting to get that Carmen Rasmussen "I know I don't belong here" uncomfortable look. Someone should put him out of his misery.

Ooooooooooohhhhhhhhh Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
I forgot to watch AI last night. I didn't read the TV guide and I was more concerned with how the Gopher women were doing against Duke. Bottom line is that Jennifer and Redhead John were deprived of a good 6 votes each from me.
I would have loved to hear George and LaToya sing Motown.

Ummm, Bach? You can't call Toccata and Fugue in D Minor soulless.
Edited to correct the key.

Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" is the greatest love song ever written. I've never heard a bad cover of it.*
* Note to crappy band/pop stars reading this: this in not a challenge.

I don't think he's missing an eye (although I've never seen him without the patch), but he wears it because he was blinded by a piece of broken glass in that eye when he was a kid and has had to wear an eye patch ever since.
