How about this?

Congratulations to Advomerc,
Our first-prize winner! Advomerc has won the new Kodak EasyShare 5.0 Megapixel Digital Camera.
Advomerc has established himself as the resident trivia master. If not for Advomerc, would we know that the origins of Friday the 13th trace back to the Knights Templar, who also may have turned the tide at the Battle of Bannockburn? Definitely not. Now we only have to figure out what the Battle of Bannockburn is.
Keep it up, Advomerc. You raise the collective IQ of the whole community.
Here is one of Advomerc's posts:
It's not common knowledge, but Friday the 13th probably got its negative connotation from King Phillip the Fair of France's surprise arrest of all of the Knights Templar in France on Friday, October 13, 1307. There's a fun fact for ya.
Yep. Another fun fact: The Templars had a navy and they flew the Jolly Roger on their ships. Then, on October 13, 1307 their fleet disappeared. Supposedly at least some of them went to Scotland where they may have turned the tide of the Battle of Bannockburn (sp?) against the English in the 11th hour.

How high is the probability that The Judge is handing these prizes out to his own socks? Hank, what did you win?
And really Shifter, how embarrassing is it to you that you've been posting up a storm over there and nary a prize in sight? I weep for your auspicious beginnings here. Bring back Ghost In A Jar.

I really liked all of it. Other than the Flower part. And the balloon part. And the reconstructing out of hair and skin flakes part. And the birthday part.
On a completely unrelated note, did anyone else watch the Lincoln bio on History channel this week? Did you notice that it was sponsored by Lincoln (the carmaker)? I thought they sort of glossed over a lot. Like what made Mary Todd Lincoln such a "troubled" woman? Also all but one of the female historians who took part in the show seemed oddly manly. Where are all the hot female historians? They have a thing against Honest Abe?
|
Mary Todd Lincoln had a severe psychological condition. Psychology and psychiatry being relatively new sciences at the time, and with her never having been in treatment, it is difficult to say what her disorder was with cetainty, but many historians speculate that she was either schizophrenic or bipolar.

Well yes, they said they thought she was manic depressive. I guess maybe examples or something would have been good. Like ways she behaved oddly.
The one thing they did say was that she was suspected of cooking the White House books and stealing cash there. And after their second son died she made Abe attend a sceance in the White House.
They just did this lead-in with "He married a troubled woman." And then they never particularly backed that up.
It sounded pretty sad though. He lost his true love to illness and then married Mary Todd because she expected him to, despite being interested in someone else. Not a recipe for a happy marriage, probably.

Hey! You're just like the high-school kids on the ad for the Lincoln bio who chirp in with fun facts about Honest Abe!
