Yeah, but lots of hip hop tracks are re-mixed. I suppose that is the DJ/producer analogue to a cover song.

I forgot about this (and in fact, am hard-pressed to come up with any covers of songs beyond one or two), and I have to agree on the KD-doing-"Criah-ah-ahyin'....oVER yoooo." Awesome.
You know, I think I even own a cover-album of other artists doing Elton John songs (is that possible? is there such a thing?), and I can't think of one song that's on it.

Some of the covers of Beatles songs on the I Am Sam soundtrack are quite good. But, like dtb, I am hard-pressed to name which ones I really like right now.

I can think of a few other examples of interpretation really changing the effect of the song. Most recently, George on American Idol doing Sitting on the Dock of the Bay. In a sense he blew it (too energetic), but somehow he conveyed an interesting alternative interpretation. Also, Clapton's two radically different versions of Layla. And the Tori Amos cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit I mentioned yesterday is a transformation of a song about mostly about anger into a song mostly about depression (although both versions have undercurrents of each).

This reminds me, I don't watch AI so I can't refer to any of the contestants by name, but either I was flipping channels or else watching one of those "ET" shows that had a clip of AI, and it was this young black woman singing "Ain't no Sunshine When [s]He's Gone" and she sounded fantastic. Very soulful and subtle. Have no idea what her name was, or if she got far in the competition, but she was great.
I also love Annie Lennox's voice (saying "soulful" reminded me of her voice). Someone mentioned "No More I Love Yous" yesterday, I think -- and it's a good example of what I mean by soulful (i.e., not as in "Soul Train").

You need to distinguish between his voice (whcih started out as "unique" and is now occasionally incoherent) and his songs. The Times They Are a Changing. It Ain't Me, Babe. Lay Lady Lay (which came along a little later). Try listening to the Byrds cover him, or Peter Paul and Mary, and you might appreciate the songs.
And what an impact his songs had. Take Blowing in the Wind, for example. That song was even sung during Mass in the hippie-influenced Catholic chuch -- Our Lady of Perpetual Motion -- I attended as a youngster. It seemed normal at the time, but thinking back and picturing my hard-hat father humming that song during Mass (from him I learned that men don't sing at Mass -- perhaps because neither of us could carry a tune) just boggles my mind.

There should, of course, be restraining orders on some singers - for example, Celine Dion should not be allowed to come within 50 feet of any good song.
|
Now, as much as people make fun of Celine Dion (and I'm not saying they're wrong, mind you), she does have quite the set of lungs.
At my old firm, there were several professional singers (like chorus members of the Met, cabaret singers, etc. -- one of them would work half the year as a secretary, and the other half in Greece as the headliner at some spot on Mykonos (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) -- tough life, huh?) and they all expressed admiration for her voice. She is of course, as cheesy as fondue, but her voice is quite something.
(One of them said, "How she gets that much sound out of that little body, I'll never know.")

Ugh. You just reminded me of the one reason I might join Mel Gibson in rejecting Vatican II - a millenium of superb music down the toilet, to be replaced by what? Crappy hippy shit and amateurishly played guitars. What clearer evidence could one want of the work of Satan?
BR(if they would only let parishes freely perform latin masses again, I might even accept priests facing the congregation like they're performing a skit instead of the altar like they're worshiping God)C

As I mentioned before (not that this will stop me from saying it again, mind you), I saw Arlo Gutherie cover a couple of Bob Dylan tunes recently and he was quite good. His voice and style are close enough to young Bob's to pull the songs off better than Bob can now. If you ever have the opportunity to hear Arlo play, GO. He is a wonderful entertainer.

Please don't mention pressing in the same sentence as tits. Ouch. Having a cat* knead on the boobs can be most unpleasant.
*when I started typing, I was thinking of the feline version, but this statement also applies to Sebby's version.

I should clarify, I abhor Bob Dylan as a performer, I don't mind him as a song writer. I'll buy/listen to cover tributes to him, but can't stand listening to the real thing. His voice is annoying, flat and usually unintelligible.
This just in - the US has defeated Poland 1-0 in an international friendly. DaMarcus Beasley scored in the 26th minute off an assist from Josh Wolff.
