O'Connor Urged to Reconsider Retirement By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer
19 minutes ago

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Four female senators called Thursday for retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to stay on the court and try for chief justice if the ailing William Rehnquist steps down.

In a letter to O'Connor, Republicans Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine and Democrats Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Barbara Boxer of California asked the nation's first female justice to consider staying on the high court if Chief Justice Rehnquist relinquishes the top spot.

So basically, 4 Democrats asked her to stay. How nice of them.

Hey, man. She's a quitter. Taking them up on the request would be like accepting a counteroffer from your firm after you told them you were quitting. Weak. She'd never get rid of the taint with her fellow justices and who the hell would hire her after she eventually retires? But it is nice to be asked.

Thanks for not pretending that it's a big tent, or that moderates have a place in the party.

Remind me where the pro-life Democrats were during that Boston party in '04?

I didn't see much of the convention -- maybe you should ask your friends over at DU.

Although they are refueled mid-air, and not by planes from the US.

BTW, they bring a beach chair on board for the non-duty pilot to sit in while waiting for the turnaround. It's a 12 hour flight each way, or something.
I had heard, during the non-believable to me (but apparently true) story of the flying halfway around the world thing, that the pilot sleeps on the way back while the plane is on autopilot. I am happy to know that there are two people, and one is awake at all times.

Is the B-2 the same thing as the Stealth, or not so much?

Yeah, no autopilot (well, not while sleeping at least).

Two types of stealth--bomber and fighter. The bomber is the 12-hour one.

Well, oddly, Mary Landrieu might be pretty close to qualifying.

But I guess we're down to 53 votes, and probably not even a majority by your count.

Forgetting about the fact that this is insane and is fully disrepectful of our constitutional process and in no way related to advice and consent, it is an incredibily rude affront to Justice O'Connor. She has served admirably for 20 plus years, the last several where, if recollection serves me, she has been considering retirement due to the fact that her husband is ill and she wants to spend his last years with him rather than working. Instead of respecting her love for her husband and family, these toothless hagged cunts impose on the sanctity of her marriage and her husband's health for their own selfish ideological reasons. The Republic has survived court vacancies and multiple court vacancies before and would do so again without having to resort to having Justice O'Connor leave her dying husbands side to re-don her robes and rescue us.

The liberals in this country should have their heads checked for a sensor of shame, because apparently, none of them have one.

I thought it was sort of sweet, but I'm probably the only one who read this story and thought of the Senators asking like this:

I agree with you that it makes little practical sense, but let's not get too self-righteous about the "disrespect to the constitutional process," whatever that means. After all, a little squinting is required, for example, to maintain that Cheney was from Wyoming and not from Texas.

Quote:
and in no way related to advice and consent,
Que? Perhaps it didn't occur in the Mural Room over cigars, but even impractical suggestions such as this one are in some way related to "advice" from the Senate.

OK. I have not heard this, but am willing to indulge in what some would consider an unforgivable lapse of information-gathering, and take you at your word.

This is a good rationale for rejecting their proposal on the merits, Penske, but in order to garner the apocalyptic, spittle-casting rage endemic to GOP talking points on the issue, we really need some hyperbolic, misogynistic references here to build us up to the proper level of emotion.

Ah! Brav-o, Penske. Brav-o.
