A friend and I are doing a CD swap this gwfgwf season. The theme is cover tunes, and I'm looking for a bit if inspiration.

The top contenders for the final burn are:

Don't Fence Me In - David Byrne covering Cole Porter
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - William Shatner covering the Beatles
For A Dancer - Jackson 5 covering Jackson Browne
Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole covering Judy Garland
Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash covering Depeche Mode
One - Aimee Mann
Burning Down the House - Tom Jones covering Talking Heads
Naive Melody - Shawn Colvin covering Talking Heads
Blackbird - Brave Combo & Tiny Tim covering the Beatles
Que Sera Sera - Pink Martini covering Doris Day
Top of the World - Shonen Knife covering the Carpenters

A coworker recommended the following -
Ring of Fire - Social Distortion covering Johnny Cash
Across the Universe - Fiona Apple covering the Beatles
and the Me First and the Gimme Gimme's body of work.

Any others?
Wilson Pickett doing "Hey Jude" with Duane Allman
Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer doing "Redemption Song"
Eagles of Death Metal doing "Stuck in the Middle With You"
Clash's "I Fought the Law"
Dead's "Big River"
Janes Addiction doing "Ripple"
Neil Young's live version of "Just Like Tom Thumb Blues" from the Dylan tribute concert
The Stones' "Love in Vain," "I Just Wanna Make Love to You," "Not Fade Away" and "Time Is on My Side" (Keith's version of TIOMS from the Wino's Hollywood Bowl show is also amazing)
The Faces' version of Dylan's "Wicker Messenger" is fantastic
Metallica's "Whiskey in the Jar" is a great rev up of a classic

Huh, I never knew that was a cover.

Along those lines, anything from Sweet Relief, fundraiser for Victoria Williams of Victoria Williams songs. Crazy Mary by Pearl Jam is good.

A random good cover is Wild Horses (Rolling Stones) by the Sundays.

"Astronomy Domine".... fuck is that good tune. I have to dust that disc off. Thanks.

In a bid to make this competitive, I submit my "November Rain is a soothing mantra to me" post.

Maybe someone can turn this into "who is the uncoolest?" poll.

(BTW I think you would win, but I have been wrong about many many things in my life.)

I can't remember who I saw while they were playing at ACL this year, but I'm sure that they weren't nearly as good. I've seen them so many times live, though, that I felt like I should experience something new.
If your cousins look like those guys, I hope there are a whole lotta tamales.

Los Lobos aren't at their best in a festival setting. They're just getting warmed up when they have to leave the stage.

ETA: Prince also wrote "I Feel For You" which Chaka Kahn made famous.

ETA again: Tom Jones did a shitty cover of Prince's "Kiss".
Your boy is playing the Supah Bowl.

I'm telling you, Frank's artistry was in bringing out the essence of a song. He took Kermit's literal statement of fact and turned it into a metaphorical tour de force.

Speaking of which, Gram Parsons doing Wild Horses (actually released before the Stones version; Parsons and Keef had been doing rEdiculous amounts of drugs together around that time).
