Anyway, give me a break -- I was caught off guard with his whole "I admit I bet on baseball" book thingy and now I have to come up with an argument besides "Pete says he didn't do it and I believe him." Give me time.
Maybe if Pete had been upfront and honest he wouldn't be in this mess now. In fact maybe this mess is far bigger just becuase he chose to lie about it and now no one trusts anything he says.

Not sure I have a point here. But I am nothing if not subtle.

Yeah, but he wants to be able to knock over the REALLY expensive bottles, not just the cheap shit, and he doesn't make enough for that, plus he's discouraged because his clients just keep setting up more cheap bottles in front of him and sticking ones - ONES! - down his pants while he performs. His friends get, like, tens and twenties.

why should they? the rule bans gambling because it's presumed to have that potential effect.

And, besides, my recollection is that, while not in the Dowd report, at least one of the bookies he dealt with asserted that he never bet on days when Mario Soto was pitching. That's inside information of some sort, and also suggests his betting was influenced by knowledge of team.

Now, sure, someone probably should go back and take the 461 incidents, and see what the Reds' record was in those games. And then see what their record was in the other games (assuming he wasn't betting on those), to see if the record was different (statistically significant). But I don't think it really changes what he did. At best that proves that he was even more incompetent than we thought.

Sure. But let me prep you for something: OJ did it. Please adjust to that before he admits it in a book.

I've heard that for money it is likely that he could jack off 10 times a day though. and who would be so bold as to ask for than that from him?

I understand. We here at we come up with arguments for every occasion are happy to help you. We offer for your examination several arguments that you might try in this difficult, difficult situation.

And really, we empathize with you that your denial has been disrupted. We hope we will be able to assist you in finding it again.

1. Pete was addicted to gambling. We recognize these days that addictions are very difficult to overcome. Instead of punishing him we should realize that we should have been helping him in his time of need. Actually, if you think about it, we should reward him for being such an effective player and manager despite this addiction. This is what America is all about. Moving past one's own difficulties to be the best you can be.

Bravo Pete. Bravo.

2. Pete is really just misunderstood. Here is a man who gave his life to the game. It was all he could think about. So much so that he felt the need to gamble on it to feed his obsession.

Sure, he made some mistakes, but look at all the pleasure he has given to so many people over the years. And after all, is he really as bad as Ty, that racist so and so? Of course not. We should recognize Pete for his contribution to the game, and as a flawed human being. We should reward the former, and dismiss the latter. After all, you should remove the log from your eye before you pull the splinter out of someone else, if you know what I am saying.

3. Pete was just doing what people do. Can you really penalize him for betting when so many other people did? Come on, what harm did he do. He didn't even bet against his own team. The guy's practically a hero! He could have used his position to his advantage, but he didn't. He even lost some money. How can you penalize him for that?

Sure he did some bad stuff, but hey, who didn't?

We rest our case.

arghhh. Why does everyone hate the Buffalo Bills so much? The conspiracy to frame him was arranged by ESPN not the LAPD.

Thank you dear sweet leagle. How about I just stick with "Pete didn't really bet on baseball and he didn't lie about it but he is lying now because he has to in order to placate the Commissioner and try to get into the HoF before the decision is left up to those veterans who are obviously just jealous of him."

I believe in Santa, I believe in Santa...

Baseball fanatics are always going on and on about "the game" --- as if this elevates it from a sport or hobby or pastime. They gave every Commissioner before Selig the power to act autocratically in defense of some etherial standard called "the best interest of baseball." How would it ever be in the best interest of baseball to impose ostracism on a player for damaging the integrity of the game, only to later agree with his supporters that his playing merit gives him a right to be honored?

Punishment for misconduct means nothing if it is overridden by performance on the field.

I too am old enough to remember Charlie Hustle in his playing days. Back then I thought he was an egotistical jerk. I still do. He could have delayed his book release and interview a week or two so that the publicity would not overshadow the HoF announcement. But, noooooooooooo! Fucking bastard.

I believe this calls for another Joe Morgan impression. Was it Ty or TM?

Sure but we're going to have to tinker with font size on the menu. Too many people thought they were ordering breaded clams. Should be ready for rollout by then, though.

Nobody freaking goes to Cooperstown anyway. It's too far from anywhere.

Rose is not the greatest hitter. He has the most base hits in the regular season of the north american major leagues, but he's not the greatest hitter ever. Using the "I'm down to one out, runners on first and second, down by one run, who do I want up at the plate," I'd go with:

1. Ruth
2. Williams
3. Bonds
(a lot of other people, including Hank Aaron, Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, Canseco in his prime, Amos Otis)
Rose comes somewhere fairly far down the list
