The only way Sharpton could make the comments a controversy was by labeling them racist. Advertisers weren't going anywhere until the word "racism" came into the picture and Al and Jesse got involved. Jesse called Proctor & Gamble, threatened the company (as he's done before) and they yanked ads. Then all the other advertisers followed suit. Imus never got to make the "I was offensive, but not racist" defense in any meaningful forum because Sharpton moved the controversy at a hyperfast speed, knowing he had little time in which to nail Imus before the public lost interest. Again, Al and Jesse were masters of their trade here.
They should hang people for doing what he did. It's that wrong.
I find it really, really interesting that the race angle was hugely played on the Imus thing, but the sexism wasn't even brought up at all. I was offended by the "hos" part alone, but the feminists just aren't that organized.

I'm surprised that people are so astonished that a prosecutor would take a one-sided account of a pending criminal matter to the press so as to exploit the attention for political purposes. Hello? If we really wanted prosecutors to act impartially, we'd given them something like life tenure, like judges.
I see your distinction, but you do realize not showing disgust for these things allows them to continue.

Prosecutors should have their cases vetted by an impartial panel of retired DAs, AUSAs and defense attorneys before bringing them.

It's the only way Al could get the advertisers scared and get around the "rappers do it too" defense. There was no racism here. Just stupidity.

And I hate to tell you this, but nobody gets in a lather over sexism. Its just a fact. Otherwise, Howard Stern would have been yanked a decade ago.

That's generally why I don't listen to rap music, too.

I get in a lather over sexism.

I get into a lather over sexism. I just think feminists realize that they/we have bigger fish to fry than Howard Stern and that energies are better spent elsewhere, perhaps more subtly.

I think by "white" you mean "Duke". Nifong probably would have been just as all over this if a couple of black guys on the basketball team had been accused.
Yeah, you are right.

Like Don Imus? The man's about to celebrate his 123d birthday.

You have my support. I get along fine with women. It's all the short annoying guys who drove me out of the workplace.

I wish you were right about my characterization being out of touch.

Sorry, dude, but calling a black person "nappy-headed" is a racist statement. If you think that it isn't, try using it in joking way with a black colleague or client and see how they react.

And Imus has a history of this stuff -- he told 60 Minutes a few years ago that he hired his producer/sidekick to "make the n-----r jokes." And he called a prominent black woman journalist "the cleaning woman" and another prominent black journalist "a quota hire." The real story isn't that he got forced off the air, but it's that he stayed on the air for so long. And had everyone from Tim Russert to John McCain to John Kerry slobbering all over him on his show. Shameful.

On the other hand, it would have been damn fine entertainment listening to Billy Packer continue to suck Duke's collective dick while the basketball team was under a cloud of scandal.

Context, Bob. He was attempting to sound like a Black comedian or rapper, very, very badly. His history, including picking up a Black kid in Atlanta on his private jet - an unplanned stop - the week before the incident to ferry the kid to some cancer treatment place, doesn't square with the picture of a racist.

The guy's coarse, no doubt. Not a racist.
