My guess is that he was as far from track and field doping scandals as they could find, and they needed some hero for this Olympics. He qualified for the most competitions, so he got the "Next Spitz" mantle. They give it every year.
The only "next Spitz" this year is Jenny Thompson, who is only one medal behind Spitz (and Matt Biondi) for swimming. This is her fourth Olympics, and she's the most decorated female athlete we've ever had at the Olympics. She took two years off after Sydney to go to Med School, and she doesn't seem to have suffered for it.

I'm all for Jenny, but it's remarkable that she has yet to win a gold medal individually.

I know. I think her best hope was the 100m fly. I think she took the world championship last year in that event, but somehow she couldn't do it this year. She does still have the 50m free.

More importantly, when they look like that, why does it matter? I'm just happy that they do.

Okay, I'm sick of this shit. Every year it gets worse. The Olympics needs to form a subsidiary that handles all of the Olympic Coverage. NBC fucking sucks large, not-female-beach-volleyball ass.

The olympics PPV for the Barcelona games was incredible. Unfortunately, I think that we were the only household that ordered it.

Maybe that one isn't uplifting enough.
*ETA: just remembered it is a U.S. woman synchronized swimmer.
EATA: here's a story about her: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5196638/

Thaaaat's OK. We've only seen her every 60 seconds on Sports Center.
