I was thinking of The Bends for 90's entry as well. OK Computer is probably a better album, but I enjoy listening to The Bends more (and maybe OK Computer doesn't make the 90's cut off - was that 90's or 00's?). Close though, either way.

It is hard to say favorite when I break things down more along genre lines. Plus I like some silly wussy stuff. Stuff some people would refuse to own up to even. Like, for example, Morrissey, Viva Hate would make my top ten list (just beating out The Smiths, Strangeways Here We Come in the wussy English college music genre).

A good bit of the Stones' catalog sounds like it was riffed off in a bar. They went for the authetic sound, which comes off sloppy at times. "Some Girls" is a great example. The disco tunes are overproduced, while the rock tunes sound like the band played them drunk. The Stones' mixes seem to have a whole lot of sounds slamming together (cymbals and pointless squealing guitar leads/noodling mixing into a pastiche of distortions). It also doesn't help that Mick can't really sing.

Keef and Charlie were always the guts of the band. The drums are perfect and the riffs always memorable.

The greatest loss the band ever suffered was burning out Mick Taylor.

Explaining why I wouldn't listen to post-Gabriel Genesis, well... that's pretty fucking easy.
I used to love (LOVE!) Peter Gabriel, [Melting Face]. In fact, it was one of my first CD purchases when I switched over from tapes. It hasn't held up as well through the years as some other music from that period. Regrettably.

Storming off stage in the middle of Aida seems like something a soprano should do, not the tenor.

Maybe he and Michael Richards should form some sort of heckler victim support group?
He is acting as if being booed on stage means he had some risk of being shot? What a fucking tool.

The thing about the guy is, he has a great motherfucking voice. You want to hear it showcased so much better than he's done. Listen to the live "Biko." The guy can belt it out.

I saw him live a bunch of times in the 90's. Some of my favorite concerts of all time were him at the Spectrum.

Gothamist linked to the Torontoist blog a couple weeks ago of their list of best cover songs. You might want to check out their lists for best cover songs.

A guitar playing friend always said Thayil was way underrated.

Exile has peaks, but it has ruts, and its production's for shit. Let it Bleed doesn't have a single bad song (even Country Honk has a charm to it). It's shorter, you're right. But its better, IMO (if there's a more apocalyptic sounding opening to a song than Gimme Shelter, I haven't heard it). Parts of that album are like someone managed to distill violence to sound and groove it into vinyl. It's blues, it's heavy metal, its scuzzy drug rock with a touch a psychedlia... and its got the London Bach Choir.

Sticky Fingers... Again, pound for pound, better than exile. Except for "You Got to Move," its a flawless record. CYHMK has possibly the most perfect riff ever written. The album never falls from its peak. After an early slew of nasty dead ahead shit - Bitch, Brown Sugar... - it goes mellow and ends with a real sweet arrangement on Moonlight Mile.

I love Exile, but whenever I hear it, I'm always left feeling like I'm hearing outtakes for LIB and SF. But, hey, its just pop music... YMMV, and I can easily see your case.
There are a lot of great Stones songs and they are great for different reasons. But can they get rid of the worm that lies gnawing at the roots of my heart? No, never.

OK Computer was 1997. And yeah, probably the better album as a concept, but I agree, I just like The Bends better.

As for embarassing wuss-rock, there was probably a time when I would have included Oasis's (What's the Story) Morning Glory on the list. Which, despite my later revulsion to them, is really pretty solid throughout.

At different moments you see with different eyes. You see differently in the morning than you do in the evening.
