Yes, this brings up a good point -- if you are moving into swanky digs and are paying other people to install swanky stuff for you at the same time, you may want to adjust upward.

Did the pizza make up for the unswankiness of both my digs and my stuff. Should I have felt shame? I steamed the carpets before they did the move. Wasn't that enough?

Or are you saying that I overtipped? I have that bad habit. My mother was a barmaid and always told me to tip well. I give my beer guy at hockey (yes, he is mine) $100 at Christmas and a $3 tip per beer during the season.

I am a fucking loser who obviously buys love with tips. I feel shame.

edited to say: see Gwinky's post below. Obviously $100 tips for movers are not uncommon for those of us who grew up frozen.

Good, so I didn't stiff the bastards unneccessarily who broke a TV set and stole 20 DVDs.

On a different subject, though I was reminded of this while looking for the nudity post, how much should I tip my movers?

They charge about 100 an hour, expect to be around for about 5 hours. There are three of them. Remember we are in the burg here so things are not as costly as say NY or LA or even Philly.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
I just moved and tipped my movers $100 each. They were really good - didn't break anything, were very careful and put everything exactly where I wanted it. They also set up stuff for me. The head guy also told me I was very strong for my size and that he thought I was about 25, so that helped.

(now people are probably going to tell me I undertipped for NYC and I'm going to feel bad)

The culture is not based on hopping. It is based on a special dance that involves spinning on your head.

I have a friend who wants said law books. Otherwise they would not have made this move. Of course she doesn't seem to want them enough to come by and pick the damn things up... I guess they will not make the next move with me.

Not ironically, but interestingly, the broken photos were all photos of me and my ex that I was conflicted about throwing out. Photos of people other than my ex remained intact.

On a related but different topic, tipping for maids around the holidays? I pay $65 every two weeks. Last year I tipped $65, but that seems kind of cheap to me. Should I do $100 or something?

Actually holiday tipping and related customs makes me really uneasy. I guess because I never know what I'm supposed to be doing...

Holy shit. If you go to thirty hockey games a season, you are down close to a grand in tips alone.

Of course killing a witness or prosecutor in your murder/drug trial is the classic way to establish Old School Cred.

Oh, you!

Silly. Hockey beers are 24oz so I only drink two or three per game (depends on length of game, whether or not there is free hockey, etc.). I have three beers in the car on the way to the game and one or two on the way home so it all works out. But I don't have to tip on the beers in the car. Lucky that, huh?

He never should have given up animation rights.

That show (1) still criminally underutilizes David Cross and Jeffrey Tambor; and (2) is the only funny thing Jason Bateman has ever done. And I'm including "Silver Spoons" in that, a show I loved at the time but which simply doesn't hold up in syndication. I'm just waiting for Bateman to be replaced by Alfonso Ribeiro.

I'm with you there. Dry cleaners? Mail man? The vet? Favorite bartender at local watering hole? Woman who comes to my door periodically selling tamales?

And Christmas cards. I forget half my friends every single year, and then the other half rats me out. Plus, it's not like I've got loads of free time to figure out who I know and how to express how happy I am that I know them.

Maybe I should put the dogs to work. They pretty much like everyone that I like, and they've got loads of free time. The puppy will be delighted to have a pen and some paper. I can just imagine her enthusiastic use of both.

I think your tip to your housekeeper was good but $100 would not be out of line.

Tips for holiday tipping
By Bankrate.com

some guidelines

$10 -$20 for the person who delivers your newspaper or your laundry, depending on whether you get daily or weekend-only service. Ditto with the garbage man if you are so inclined.

$25 for those individuals who keep you looking your personal best, the hairdresser, barber or manicurist. The proper holiday tip is equal to the cost of one visit if you go frequently and $20 to $25 if you only go occasionally.

$25 to a parking attendant and $50 for whoever runs the garage you normally use.

$25 to $100 apiece for a doorman, building superintendents, condo association or homeowner association managers.

One day's pay for someone who works for you once a week, such as a cleaning person, but, someone who works for you five days a week, such as a nanny, one week's salary is standard, although some people believe in giving two.

You could give your child's primary day-care worker a gratuity of $10 to $20 or a small gift.

When it comes to the mail carrier, federal law prohibits U.S. Postal Service employees from accepting cash or gifts worth more than $20.

For baby-sitters, at least one day's earnings.

$50 for the wait staff at a restaurant or bar you frequent often.
