This is pretty funny, especially since I grew up in a black and Puerto Rican neighborhood, and when I was younger looked like I could be Puerto Rican or Dominican or whatever and was frequently asked (and still am sometimes) by old and young hispanics alike if I was spanish.* Nice try, though.

Spanish is what the hispanic/chicano/latino people in New Mexico call themselves, as well. I'm pretty sure that it's an effort to distinguish themselves from the Indian (that population does not call itself Native American) population.

ETA: My (non-hispanic) grandmother and I once got into an argument about this when she once told me that I wasn't hispanic. The whole 11-generation Texan thing, in her eyes, meant (in her warped logic) that I should self-identify as Spanish, even though there'd been a lot of inter-marriages since 1752.* I think that distinction helped her sleep at night when she started thinking about who her daughter married.

*uh, an inner marriages, apparently there weren't that many families down in the valley, and my family tree has a lot of weird forks that probably shouldn't be scrutinized too much.
