TM's Olympic Rant - Part Two

the Hamm's started gymnastics at 6. you cannot do the stuff they did last night w/o training forever.
The gymnastics/skating fever probably hits far more girls than boys. That is, there are alot of girls I've known who wanted to be a gymnist or skater and practiced every day. None made it.
There are far fewer boys caught up in it, and perhaps this is the point Atticus should have made. If you consider the harm of losing your childhood to practice for the chance of being in the Olympics, the harm occurs to far more girls than boys. However, every young man you saw last night lost a good chunk of his childhood to the sport.

Buddy of mine from college started gymnastics at age 8, went on to captain an NCAA Division I Championship team. Definitely consumed much of his life through college, when he retired from it. As for physical effects, we can never be sure if he went into gymnastics because he was short or whether the training affected his growth. He was like 5'4", but he was VERY strong.

How, exactly, would you know what a non-geek can understand?

No, to get girls football and basketball were (in my school) best, followed third by track and field, as opposed to swimming and soccer, which were down the line considerably. I imagine in other areas of the country the rankings may have been different.
But all of them were better than being a BQ or a debate nerd (sorry AG).

That's right, your dating problems were caused by what the chlorine did to your hair. Normally, chicks dig the long-winded.

Oddly enough, our football and basketball teams got no respect from the ladies, even though our football team was ranked nationally (in USA Today) my senior year. The soccer and tennis teams (or guys that didn't play sports) got all of the chicas (seriously). Probably b/c my HS was very segregated class-wise. No real middle class. Upper-middle and lower.

Hardly. I managed to take dance classes 3 to 4 times a week and still be a cheerleader, yearbook staffer, etc in HS and belong to a sorority and bartend in college.

I'm sure this is a Wonk-type move, but I think that the "how great is it" comment is alluding to the legendary beauty of Scandanavian babes than to the absence of beaches in Norway (just giving the B of the D).

Correctamundo. (I'm going through a brief Fonzie phase.)
What else would it be? Womens? (There is no such word, for those keeping score at home -- just like there's no such thing as "childrens".)

ah, yearbook staffer. so how many pictures of yourself did you slip into the yearbook each year? I think my mythical college would automatically ding anyone who owned up to being a yearbook staffer on his/her application.

OOoh. This reminds me. The other day, I was walking near TM's office (location not disclosed) behind a woman whose ratio I think TM would find appealing. You could see the outline of her thong through her pants, but (surprisingly) it really didn't look as cheesy as that sounds.
Anyway, she was WEARING A SWEATER AROUND HER NECK.
(Did I make a 4-fecta?)

I was the sports editor and completely fabricated every statistic in the sports section.

The 4x100 team never had a chance either. And I'm not saying this in hindsight. It was obvious based on previous times before this year's race. At most, Phelps could have won 6 gold medals, but even that is/was unlikely.
|
He's only 19, people. He's a great swimmer. The 200 free is not even his event, and he stayed there with the best of them.

That explains the football team's USA Today ranking.

Who needs cheerleaders? They are nothing compared to the archery groupies?
