A good friend of mine held that philosophy. Firm screwed him, kept him as a junior associate. He had no decorations or personal effects in his office at all. He left and made partner at another firm in under a year.

Indeed. I never decorate. And I've only been at um, five different firms in the past six years.

Does she really think if I eat noodles every day and ride a Huffy, I'll be able to retire at 50? It is hard to believe, yet that is exactly what her post said. Thank you, Sebastian, for so ably dismantling the fallacy of BRC's inane get-rich-slow scheme.

I actually buy spendy sunglasses on purpose, on the theory that I'll work harder not to break or lose them if they actually cost something.
And you all know where I stand on watches.

In theory that works, but in practice, if you're not there by 5:01 p.m. on departure day, the furniture has already scattered to others' offices. You're better off staying up on gossip and getting the friends-and-family advance distribution.

I hear you, brother. I’m still amazed that I did that. Its almost like I wasn’t even replying to her at all, but merely using her post as a diving board, to fly off on some rant on another issue which her post popped into my head!

2. on the sunglass theory.
And I spent a lot on my current watch because I wanted the face to be surrounded by diamonds. Just a whim that has worked out very well.

I like this. You should construct all future posts around it. Maybe with a sock.

Did you miss the part where I referred to them being fired or having quit? Or was this just a chance to seque to a lame chair war story?

You've got me beat by one year. But how many different areas of law? I’m on # 4.

Other than an unfortunate kiddie-porn-on-work-computer incident, everyone I know of who has been fired or quit a law firm job has had at least a couple weeks of transition. And friends of people who quit would know far, FAR in advance of the announcement to the firm generally. Enabling them to make thoughtful dispositions of coveted furniture and plants.
This is all making me want to clean my office.

Nobody has ever considered me chained. I turned down a partnership offer once already. That was strange. I really liked that joint, but I saw no future there. Just short term money.
