Motive. Although I guess we can never truly explain why we like something and don't like something else, unless we are consciously purchasing something b/c we know others will like it.
I have no idea why my favorite color is blue. Or why I like artichokes. I hope it's not b/c I'm trying to exhibit my individuality.

There's a guy in Houston who has a similar do (mohawk that is about a foot tall, spiked, color subject to change), who rides a vespa and is often in a really nice suit. I assume that he either owns the company or is otherwise indespensible.

I just went outside to check, and the word on the street is that PLF's baroque neurosis expresses itself through the seeking of negative validation from skate-rat store clerks who he simultaneously despises and (subconsciously) would like to emulate. The other word on the street is "sandwich."

Given that there will probably be 691,427 pair of the Rat shorts sold in this country, associating anything "individualistic" with clothing choices is probably illusory, unless you're naked or wearing a toga.
My generation, long ago, grew our hair long to show our individualism.
All 62 million of us.

The first. Its impossible not to express you individuality through certain purchases. Its assumed you like the pattern/color etc of what you're wearing, so it gives us an indicator of what you're like. Its not infallible, but its a start.
I prefer surf shorts and t shirt or a suit. I don't do the jacket thing or the corp casual very well. If you spent a week monitoring my dress you'd see I move from GQ to burnout, but hit no markers in between. Which pretty much explains that I have a split, confused personality. Am I wrong?

I do the same thing (I wear either a dress or jeans - nothing in between) and don't have a split, confused personality.
But I do have an ass. Perhaps your lack of one is where your personality troubles lie.

This explains the sudden decision of all my male law-school classmates to collectively grow a goatee or a soul patch, which were collectively shaved the instant Tightass & Bastard showed up to recruit.
They looked better anyway. It's tough to mix really-I'm-still-cool-and-alternative-see-I'm-artfully-shaggy with all that J.Crew.

No. Your generation showed its individuality by freely and openly fucking. So much fucking. And drugs. Damn your generation, you lucky bastard.

I am tempted to write a long, typical diatribe about the extent to which clothing choices necessarily include decisions about the expression of the self (or elements thereof), and that the very idea of expressing the self presumes an audience and therefore, necessarily, includes an element of response to what others are expected to think about it, but I will spare you all.
Your thanks are not necessary.
BR(I have "in between" clothes, which are not really formal but definitely not strictly casual as casual seems usually to be manifested, and there I get away with a fair amount of eccentricity (the goal more or less being to confuse and disturb New Yorkers, who do not do eccentric at all, in clothes that are still fairly flattering and minimize the fact that I definitely have an ass))C

The new cup-sized camis are good enough for me. Plus, Bravissimo now makes button-down shirts for the full-breasted that actually fit all over--sized by your waist-to-nip ratio--sweet!

I start wearing shorts in early april. If it gets over 60, the shorts come out. I'm a big pullover and shorts guy. My legs never get cold.
