Abraham Lincoln's PR men sleeping on the job --- again!

"No President has ever done more for human rights than I have."
--- Pres. George W. Bush
The New Yorker, January 19, 2004, p. 64.

For your handy reference, these are the presidents who did less for human rights than George W. Bush:

George Washington : 1789-1797
John Adams : 1797-1801
Thomas Jefferson : 1801-1809
James Madison : 1809-1817
James Monroe : 1817-1825
John Quincy Adams : 1825-1829
Andrew Jackson : 1829-1837
Martin van Buren : 1837-1841
William Henry Harrison : 1841-1841
John Tyler : 1841-1845
James K. Polk : 1845-1849
Zachary Taylor : 1849-1850
Millard Fillmore : 1850-1853
Franklin Pierce : 1853-1857
James Buchanan : 1857-1861
Abraham Lincoln : 1861-1865
Andrew Johnson : 1865-1869
Ulysses S. Grant : 1869-1877
Rutherford B. Hayes : 1877-1881
James A. Garfield : 1881-1881
Chester A. Arthur : 1881-1885
Grover Cleveland : 1885-1889
Benjamin Harrison : 1889-1893
Grover Cleveland : 1893-1897
William McKinley : 1897-1901
Theodore Roosevelt : 1901-1909
William H. Taft : 1909-1913
Woodrow Wilson : 1913-1921
Warren G. Harding : 1921-1923
Calvin Coolidge : 1923-1929
Herbert C. Hoover : 1929-1933
Franklin D. Roosevelt : 1933-1945
Harry S. Truman : 1945-1953
Dwight D. Eisenhower: 1953-1961
John F. Kennedy : 1961-1963
Lyndon B. Johnson : 1963-1969
Richard M. Nixon : 1969-1974
Gerald Ford : 1974-1977
Jimmy Carter : 1977-1981
Ronald Reagan : 1981-1989
George Bush : 1989-1993
Bill Clinton : 1993-2001

Will he be drummed out of the Birch Society for poormouthing Reagan? And whatever happened to Exodus 20:12?

He may have actually done less, but I'll cut him some slack.

Umm, nice list, excellent quote (hi watchtower), but let's focus on those whom I believe no one here would ever dispute doing more, for example, George Washington (bearing no small amount of responsibility for bringing the world democracy, and for beginning the process of making "former president" a common phrase), Abraham Lincoln (um, freed slaves) or perhaps Woodrow Wilson (UN) or FDR (defeating Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan).

No doubt, all of these folks had bigger opportunities than George W.

But now we get to turn to the favorite question of the PB: Did George Bush just lie, yet again!

Wait, didn't he do a lot in regard to getting people to wear coats in the winter? Plus, he was one more President for Ohio to crow about!!

I'm not an expert of Biblical heirarchy, but perhaps it's trumped by Exodus 22:18- remember Sr. left Sadaam.

I don't think they post full-text articles. You'll have to do what I do, and pretend to subscribe.

Run a Google search on the full text of the quotation, and you'll see it taken out of context* by five million liberals' blogs.

*Or not.

Um, Hankski, don't you mean 22:17?

(or maybe you are in to 22:19, but that wouldn't work, because, of course, the Gods are one and the same, even if one is three and the other's not).

There are of course variations in the verses in chapter 22.
I believe it is Standard protocal, however, to defer to King James for anonomous internet citing.

A last name ending in a vowel and you're siding with the damned Anglicans?

Note that the Catholics agree with the Jews on this one.

I don't subscribe*, but I do remember that issue and reading that quote. That's not what the article was about, but as I recall was tossed in as an aside evoking [Bush vacuousness]/[regrettable but understandable extemporaneous remarks made by Presidents, well, daily]

(Handy-dandy color codes for PB conclusory remarks:
DEM
GOP)

Gattigap

*Or maybe I do. I reserve the right to retain plausible deniability on this point depending on the cocktail party in which I find myself.

The article, which I merely skimmed, seemed to be about the adminstration's ability to control the press. The quotation came from a one-on-one interview with Bush himself, which his handlers arranged when it was clear the reporter was writing about something in which a freeze-out would simply prove the point. The article makes it sound like a bit of a non sequitur, for what it's worth.

Quote:
One also saw his backslapping charm, and his bluster. When the interview was over, I talked with Bush about New York, and about one of his friends there, Tom Bernstein, a former co-owner, with Bush, of the Texas Rangers. Bernstein, a strong proponent of human rights, regularly faces abuse from liberal friends for supporting Bush. "Bernie is great," Bush said. He then looked at me intently and declared, "No President has ever done more for human rights than I have."
That's all the context I'm willing to retype. Mebbe Bush was calling to mind something he said defensively to "Bernie" or something.

"Anyone who lies with an animal shall be put to death."

So much for the "Checkers" speech.
