I thought the Miracle of Birth exhibit was way cool. Sex ed for the little city kids.** They have bleachers for people to sit and watch and also have it on TV screens.
**The Fugee Dad told me that when I was in second grade, the teacher called home to say that a graphic description of a calf being born was perhaps not appropriate for Show & Tell.

I got trapped in the Miracle of Birth building during a near-tornado last Thursday while trying to get to the Sonic Youth/Flaming Lips show in the Grandstand. Finally, we found someone with a map and realized that with a quick wet sprint, we could get to the Department of Natural Resources Building, make our way through there, and then another quick sprint to one of the many beer stands It was covered and we waited out the remainder of the storm there. I highly recommend seeing the Flaming Lips live, but don't do any drugs, because it is not that kind of show.

I've never been to the Minnesota State Fair, but I have been to the Wisconsin State Fair and I read a David Foster Wallace essay about the Iowa State Fair.

Nothing while I was there, although there was a pig that seemed ready ready ready. There were some very cute lambs that seemed to be of a recent vintage.

I think the Wallace essay was about the Indiana State Fair. I enjoyed it, although it was seen as a bit of a shameful act of self-loathing/currying favor with East Coast elite by at least two fellow Midwesterners.

Well, sure. And the cruise-ship thing just confirmed it, no?
eta: I would bet dollars to donuts that it was Iowa, not Indiana, but my in-laws are sleeping in the room where I've got that book.
eta: Three seconds on Google suggests it was maybe Illinois instead. My in-laws are still sleeping.

when my daughter was 5 she wanted to be a vet. at the michigan state fair we saw a lamb being born- a vet had to reach up into the mamma to turn a breach birth around. then she didn't want to be a vet.

I had no lamb. I did have some deep-fried, breaded, cream cheese-filled pickles. Did I mention that it is a bad idea to go to a Flaming Lips show on drugs?

Illinois it is. All those Midwestern I-states are basically the same, though, right? And the ones that begin with other letters, too.

you know how people say that if you've been drinking that when you fall and hit the ground you tend to be injured less than if sober? does that apply to snake bites? cuz I just saw SOAP and I likely would be 3 drinks into the flight when the snakes get out, and that would slow my ability to fight them, but maybe I could survive a bit better if I'd been drinking?

Alcohol slows your circulatory system, so the venom would not race through your system like it would in the fuckers all hopped up on caffeine. You would be a survivor.
