A lease converts your depreciating asset into someone else's. It's a rental. You rent beer; why not your car?

Why buy for resale value? If you like to have a new car every few years, just lease. Buying for resale just means sticking yourself with what other people want, not what you want. It's why every house looks like a stupid mcmansion, with the half brick, half aluminum siding, the palladian windows, and all the stupid gables--because that's what other people want.
Leases only work if you don't drive much. Otherwise, you eat a huge payment when you turn it back in over the mileage limits.
I try to minimize my carrying costs on cars by purchasing things which have low maintenance issues and good resale. The funny thing is, you know what's the best car for that sort of buying? The 3 Series. Its affordable and has fantastic resale numbers.

The Audi has a good warranty these days, but it drops like a stone off the lot. You know what's not a bad steal right now? The Jag full sized sedan. Jags are made by Ford so they're miles more dependable, but the brand is still saddled with the rep as a piece of shit. You can snatch them used off lease for nothing and they're pretty cushy. Its not a German performance ride, but its a great comfort car.

I had a Japanese truck some time ago that I ran for 40k miles and then sold for nearly what I bought it for. Two years of use for less than $1000. I don't think I'll ever get near that sort of return again.

I'm thinking there's still no free lunch.

A lease just calls your depreciation something else, and takes it out of your wallet.

Dude, you have no idea what you're talking about. We drove a 2003 530 and a 2004 530 and there is NO comparison. The 2004 is, well, I don't want to use the word sophisticated, but there it is. The steering, the road manners the cornering - no contest. The 525 is severely underpowered - trekker's right - get the 3 series for about the same price - it's a lot more fun to drive. But by the time you get to the 530, the car has ample acceleration and better road manners than an Audi in the same price range.

I'm not a perfromance nut. I generally buy cars for durability and looks. I like the way the old 5 looks. I don't like the way the new 5 looks. If I wanted prime perfromance, I'd buy a used Porsche, which one could pick up for a little more than a new fully tricked out 5.

I think the new BMWs look like space machines. I also don't care for the new Benz convertibles. BMW seems to be going for angles while Benz is rounding off all the edges. I don't care for either. Althought I will admit that the new Benz S class looks a lot better than the old S Class boxes of the 90s.

Could the car talk go to the car board and we talk about something more exciting? Like boobies or Brad Pitt or dental floss?

I'm on a long call and need amusement. please.

I wasn't really fond of the looks in the earlier photos of the new 5er or the 7, but now that I see them on the road (and in my garage) it's growing on me. I will never like the CLK.
You can keep the used car market going - I have issues driving in a car that someone else has farted in.

Math IS hard. If your payments are higher on a lease than on a loan (same terms, etc.), it's because you're bearing the risk of the car's value at the end of the loan period.

Of course, you can always take out a 7 year car loan if you want lower payments, though.
