In other news, anyone watch the end of the Dallas/Buffalo game last night? Unbelievable. Although, the defensive play on the failed 2 point conversion was clearly face guarding. Not surprised none of the announcers failed to bring that up.

I get to go to Boston today. Yay! (In a pushy the puppy type way.)

How is it a shock the indians won, especially after taking the first two games? The only "shock" would ahve been in teh yankees had come back to win game 5. (note to ESPN: If you replace tony kornheiser, don't pick a TBS baseball announcer.)
Can you explain to me why certain games are on YES, others on My9, and still others on Fox and TBS?

What is the reasoning behind each assignment?

Then it dawned on me that Coltrane might not be your real name.

In other NYC news, a guy went on a rampage over on 2d or 3d Avenue over the weekend, where he stole some knives from a restaurant, and went out on the street randomly stabbing people until an off-duty transit cop shot him (not fatally). Anyway, on the news, they were interviewing an eyewitness, who described the attacker as "Just a regular crazy guy..."

That tickled me immensely.
Hearing about the crazy guy, I might have gone to NYPost.com and searched for the name Ironweed, before it would dawn on me that probably isn't his real name.

(1) Thanks for checking up on me. I did not run the race (and was never signed up). However, even if I had signed up and had planned on running it, I likely would have bailed. I do not run well in the heat. Plus, unlike Penske, I am qualified for Boston 2008.*

(2) Everyone needs to stop blaming the race director for allegedly running out of water. People were dumping 5-6 cups of water on their heads at every aid station. No one can control the weather, and the amateurs who were complaining need to realize that this aint the 5k turkey trot.

*Hi Penske! :hi:

I think I read that one guy died.

I like running but common sense says if it is THAT hot, perhaps skip the race, no?

I agree with you on the NFL time out rule. It's ridiculous. If they're going to ice the kicker, they should do it well in advance of the kick.

On the Yankees, it was no shock to me that they lost. At the beginning of the season our problem was starting pitching. At the end of the season our problem was starting pitching. They had superior pitching, they win.

And Tony Gwynn is huge. Can we get a shoulder and above shot, please?

Don't get me started on Into the Wild. I haven't seen the movie, but if Penn romanticized this kid's journey w/out including the huge, arrogant and reckless mistakes he made, then it's going to make me angry.
I agree. I am really looking forward to this movie, for one thing because I expect that it will be visually splendid.

But let's be honest. One of the messages Krakauer made in that book (and in the other one too, which I think was called Into Thin Air) was that none of this needed to happen, and that had he been slightly better prepared and slightly better aware, the outcome would have been different.

I've re-typed the above paragraph a couple of times so as to not give away any important plot points.

Krakauer got it right. I'm worried that Penn omitted that message.

I'm not sure how to further discuss this w/out ruining it for people who haven't read the book (although the book is 10+ years old).

Sooner or later, a coach is going to call the last-second time out on a kick where the kicker misses. Given another chance, the kicker will make the kick. And that will be the end of that fad. There is a 39% chance that the coach will be Norv Turner.

*Hi Penske! :hi:
Most of the people I was checking up on DNF'd. And these are people who expected to finish in under 2:30. It was really, really awful, apparently.

I don't run well in the heat either. If it's that hot on NYC Marathon day, I'm bailing for sure.

spoiler- this was well publicized so i can't imagine spoiler is necessary

I don't know what all lessons were in his book, besides that rich people who don't belong there, don't belong there, but some lessons have to be taken as subjective to the people who would be there.

there was a guy at my big law who was there during that storm. he was a serious climber. he was climbing the highest mountain on each continent. for years he had been building for Everest.

then, there he was 250 yards (or feet- can't remember) from the top, and he faced a choice. Guides were saying a storm was coming in and they shoould go down. some people went down, some kept heading for the summit. The ones who went on died.

but think of that decsion. you've worked for years for that one dream, you know you likely won't come back, and you're like an hour or two away. And you have to go back? It's easy to say it, but that would be one hard turn around to make.

Wrong Krakauer book, Hank.

That's not how it works. You don't make the decision then. There is no thinking at that point. You made the decision to turn around when they tell you to turn around well before you get on that mountain. Every decision for every scenario on Everest is made before you start climbing.

You are right. Common sense dictates that you should not run a race when it is so hot that you will die running it. That guy was an imbecile.
