Too bad I can't get her drunk first.

Don't these shots cause autism? That's what Jenny McCarthy told me.

No, really? That's also why a flu shot has a limited possibility of being effective. Shot covers strain A. Someone on the train near you with strain Z sneezes. You get the flu.

True. But at least I'll be covered for all the people sneezing on me with Type A virus. Better some coverage than none.
The other reason I always get the flu shot is that the first time I got one the doctor told me studies had shown people who got the flu shot also got 30% fewer upper resp. infections. I have always been susceptible to those so even that would be a huge benefit for me.

Amanda Peet told me the opposite.

Yeah, that's why they update it every year. They try to cover the most prevalent strains.
Your hypo is like advising teenagers not to wear condoms because they won't protect them from lung cancer. Brilliant.

The H1N1 requires two shots because it is quite a bit different from previous strains. Your autoimmune system is good, but not that good.
At least you can have a drink.

But Jenny McCarthy has Jim Carey backing her up. Who can Amanda Peet call into the fray?

Wrong. I suggest you do some analogy prep here. There are no side effects, disputed or not, from condom use.

Wrong. I've suffered more side effects from condom use than Jenny McCarthy's kid has from vaccines. Those things ruin the whole moment for me. And always gave women a chance to think twice about what was about to happen. That's never been good for me.
And I once dated a girl who was allergic to latex. At least that is what she told me. Do you think she was lying?
And really, do you want me to come up with a better analogy?

It will be available in October. I am getting the H1N1, and have already gotten the seasonal flu shot. If I weren't pregnant, I might not get the H1N1, but the population with the highest DEATH rate from H1N1 is pregnant women, so I'll be getting it.
Still not sure whether I'll have the kids get H1N1 vaccine, but they will be getting the seasonal one.

Atticus, you are behind the times. Dtb got knocked up by some car racing nut in a dirty wife-beater, and is going to have a shotgun wedding. She hasn't said whether he has a mullet or not, and we aren't pressing her on it. We also haven't heard whether she'll wear white or not, but I understand the entire Connecticut Appalachain region is abuzz over the question.
I've put a five-spot on "dusky peach". Gatti's making book.

I knew about the wedding. I just thought the references to the shotgun were facetious. I shouldn't have let my subscription to Westport Magazine lapse.
Or my monthly membership in sepharticbumppicoftheday.com.

Underparenting with Tom Socca
In case you have been too busy with your spawn to read The Awl, I commend to you Tom Socca's column called Underparenting:
Link to all of his articles, including Underparenting.
A small excerpt:
Quote:
But child car seats are miserable. ... After your sixth or seventh hour locked in a five-point harness, unable to look over your shoulder, propped up so you can't sleep without your head lolling awkwardly over—you'd start screaming too.
The safety seat is ruining American family life and the automotive experience. I was horrified when vehicles started coming equipped with DVD players—individual ones, even. God forbid that children should ever be deprived of constant, demographically-targeted amusements. ...
But when I was little and bored in the car, I wasn't strapped down and immobile. I had, at most, a little booster seat that went under the lap belt, with a tubular metal roll bar that probably would have impaled me in the event of an accident. A fair amount of the time, I was crawling around loose in the cargo space, or on top of rear seats folded flat. Even with a seat belt on, I could work through the dull hours by rolling Matchbox cars around the back seat, or craning my head around to watch the scenery, or sucker-punching my brother in the floating ribs. There were options.
