We've already done the road-trip CD collections, etc. So here's a slightly different question.
If you had to drive across the country, is there a particular place, thing, meal, or experience you would be sure to stop and see or have?
(I'm not thinking here of stopping to visit (say) your cousin Frank in Iowa City, primarily because having an imaginary internet friend visit your relatives would be unsettling to them, and confirm much of what they've already thought about you. Sure, there's probably some value in that -- but I have no desire to enmesh myself in your little family drama.)
Instead, I'm wondering about things like whether C2ed has a particular suggestion about the painted desert in AZ. Or if NotBob wishes to share the location of his most highly recommended Piggly Wiggly. Or if ShapeShifter has a suggestion for the best mammalian strip club in Tulsa. Etc, etc.
There's no fixed route as of yet, but know for general purposes that MapQuest tells me that in my trip from DC to LA, I should pass through PA, OH, IN, IL, MO, OK, TX, NM, AZ, and CA. Suggestions anywhere in the neighborhood are appreciated, and even ones that I can't use (like, say, Maine) would still be nice to hear about.
See you on the other side --

Another great midwestern destination: Carhenge
Slightly out of your way, but worth the trip.
I'm just trying to fill in the map for those of you living in parts of the country that will be underwater when the icecaps melt.

FUnny, I have some in my purse. They are "St. Claire's Organic Ginger Snaps". There is a nice scenic picture of flowers and trees, and there are "over 100 snaps per tin". My sister who lives on steak and cheese and pringles and is a bit overweight, LOVED them, so they are not just for the earth conscious. I think they are in the impulse purchase area near the registers butalso probably in the candy section. And they are not curiously expenseive

Didn't we agree you'd stay out of this side of the pool?

Having made the trip from coast to coast several different times, here are my recommendations:
-Graceland. "There's a pretty little thing waiting on the King down in the Jungle Room."
-The Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, OK. It's kitsch, but it's American Kitsch, which makes it fun.
-Vegas, baby. Because if you're that close, you just should.
-In LA, stay at the Viceroy in Santa Monica, eat at Chinois on Main or at Diaghilev, and get a tattoo at Sunset Strip Tattoo.

Honey, if you pee in the shallow end, it will make its way to the deep end.

Those are excellent. I keep them on my desk. They are very spicy. The lemon ones are good, but ginger snaps are the best.
PP, Whole Foods is now advertising its vegan takeway Thanksgiving dinner. Great stuff.

I sitli think leagl shoudl archive truly classic posts such as this. I remember Ty wrote afterwards that SD's argument was a real "tour de force". So use that

There are also a number of interesting slaughter houses that are worth a visit; try outside of Chicago or outside of Omaha.

Are all people not motivated by selfishness? Seems to be the human condition I witness day in day out.
You're right... I am not motivated strictly by selfishness. You've properly disconnected the message from the messenger.

Although it is out of your way a little, 80 West of Nebraska is phenomenal. Everyone should take it once in his life. 70 Right outside Denver I recall as being pretty hip also.

They are there on their own, I don't need to archive them. Just click on search. Choose the forum you want to search. Make sure you choose Show as Posts. Type in whatever you want to search for.

How about this? Be sure to hit Prescott, AZ right at sunset and travel down that windy road from the high desert to the low desert real slowly and enjoy the most beatufiful sunset vista you will ever see in your life. Go slowly bc it might be real easy to fall off th road a la Toonces.
Try to hit Santa Fe in a thunderstorm if possible. And there are some neat ruins near the Four Corners in SW Co and NW NM- pueblos.
And be sure to catch Siegfried and Clay in Vegas.

I'm sure you realize that you will be getting more scenic suggestions in western states than you will for the midwestern states. As far as quaint goes in Indiana, there is a artsy town called Nashville in Brown County south of Indy that has typical artsy town stuff (playhouse, shops, country restaurants). It is also close to (I believe) the only ski slope in Indiana, but that isn't really much of a draw. Southern Indiana and Kentucky are far more pleasant to drive through because of rolling hills, etc. than any part of Ohio or the northern parts of IN. Red river gorge in KY is pretty, but if you've ever done stuff in VA (since you live in DC), that will not be dissimilar enough for it to matter...
There is nothing pretty in the parts of TX you will likely see. Lots of boot shops in Amarillo though, if that is your thing. And TX cops love to pull over out-of-staters driving through. Obviously northern AZ, including the painted desert and the Grand Canyon are must sees. If you have extra time, you might consider driving up to Zion/Arches or some of the other Utah/western Colo parks. They differ from the AZ ones in that they include much more reds/oranges and there are tons of monuments (stand-alone rock formations).

I especially like the parts where she has sex with those two chicks in Bangkok, and goes on to travel the world having lots of 1970s-style interracial bisexual humpee. Those Yale profs really know how to integrate culture into language courses.

Damn Atticus, beat me to the punch with pictures of Mireille! Most of the people here probably think you're kidding about your last paragraph. Vive la "French in Action!" Vive Pierre Capretz! In many ways he symbolizes everything that's good and right about the FB. Higher education, foreign culture, and braless teenage blondes.
