The question went to your peers Wonk. I don't think it fair for you to count the help.

You always do this... Sidd made a pretty good point when he said that under your preferred system, we'd live in a country with no court system. What say you in reply? I mean, he does make a damn good point. If the Courts weren't there to act as a check on idiot legislators, then who would?

We can then retire to the sitting room for cigars and white russians.

I've been following this conversation for pages now, and the one thing I can't figure out is why were you guys are equating desegration with abortion rights. You seem to believe that, like segregation, the pro-life folks are just objectively wrong, without considering that there may be something to the protecting life argument. In other words, the comparison is certainly not perfect, and this is not JUST a question of civil rights. That is why the federalism side of the argument is very attractive to many . . . because, unlike segregation, we just don't know enough to know who is right on this issue.

I never said there was anything wrong with my school. Why would you say that?
My main point is that court ordered bussing caused white flight from the cities and that was bad for blacks and that blacks were more harmed by that than helped by the court ordered bussing.

I don't agree that court ordered bussing made people less racist. And I feel sorry for you if going to a segregated school would have turned you into a racist.
I know many people from areas where there aren't many blacks around and their schools are segregated simply because blacks don't live where they live in any large number. Like Maine. But those people aren't racists.

That is in fact all I was critiquing - the method of deployment. You and Sidd need to learn to read.

I'm not equating desegregation with abortion rights, and I never have (well, maybe that one time, but I was trying to nail a pro-choice activist. Even Slave would have gone my way on that).
I think that they are qualitatively different issues.
I was responding to Hello's diatribe on how courts have never actually done anything to benefit American society.

If it's my fault, why did you feel compelled to edit your post to add this:
eta - I reread my previous post and I see where the confusion is. I meant desegregation of schools by court ordered bussing but wasn't clear. I don't think that on balance court ordered bussing was helpful to blacks.
The thing that has been the most helpful to blacks were laws that would penalize employers who discriminated and other laws like the fair housing laws.
And as for "agreeing" with Balt's "method of deployment" comment, you should read the whole thing. Are you saying you'd support more bussing of white people? That the USSC should have intervened to that level of detail? That would be .... surprising.

Got a handy reference to the racial makeup of New Trier? You do that and I'll look for the racial makeup of Cook County. Deal? This should be a fun comparison!
